Aftermarket decat or gut?

Post by Jeags »

Hi all,

Leaning more towards decating my RX-8 after the next mot. It's currently got a working OEM cat which I'd like to preserve, and it came with a gutted OEM cat. Just wondering whether there are any benefits to running a purpose built aftermarket decat or should I stick with the gutted cat I already have?

Cheers,

Joe

Think you'll find the only difference is the sound!

the smell of decat may bother you

they really do stink and a decent 200 cell aftermarket will clean it up and pass MOT

Phrased that incorrectly, what I meant was I find it easier to get OEM ones to fit correctly compared to aftermarket. :thumright:

Right, I see. I understand the smell they give off as mine came decated. was a bit confused as it was a nightmare to get off, but it passes mot's fine. It clearly hasn't been off the car in a while, but is very clean inside the cat like it has been gutted , yet no cel or emission issues in past mot's.

Just wondering whether it would be of any benefit to fit an aftermarket, but it looks like I'll stick with my gutted cat. Cheers.

Many decats will be lighter, which most people value. They can sound better too.

I have the Toyosports one below (was only £70 3 years ago) which is significantly lighter than my cat. It fits perfectly and has had no problems coming on and off repeatedly. Some people prefer the expensive ones but I love the sound of this one. Below is a sound recording of mine. You'll hear that it sounds pretty different to a gutted cat. The rest of my exhaust and engine is completely stock:

But yeah there's absolutely no harm in running a gutted one... provided it's definitely clear inside and free of any blockage.

Hard to tell in a sound clip. How you you describe the difference in sound between a gutted and the Toyosports decat?

One advantage of a ghetto decat is that it would pass a roadside visual inspection check, though still not an emissions check.

VOSA and various Police forces were getting more active last year, and into this year before the virus hit, especially around known meeting points for customised cars, checking window tints, decats etc and impounding cars that couldn't be rectified on-the-spot.

Some Police forces were just prosecuting for the vehicle offences, while others were taking the "driving with no insurance" route, if the mods were undeclared. Note that no UK insurer will accept "decat" as a declared mod on any car that's required to have one.

"No insurance" is £300 (minimum) fine and 6-points, unless it goes to court in which case it's unlimited fine and potential disqualified from driving.

If it's a repeat offence, including just a previous warning, then the car can be crushed.

Agree with the above however one possible disadvantage of a ghetto decat is if a thieving scrote looks under the car they may well assume the cat is intact and have a go at chopping it out.

That's certainly a risk, depending where you park.

Like a compund full of police cars and vans when sixteen cats were taken off of said vehicles.  Bit embarrasing that one, but I did get the job of installing the CCTV after the horse, or in this case the cat, had bolted.

I am going back to standard cat from toyo. With toyo and cobra exhaust I am making 104db!

So will be selling my toyo. I need the sound to be lower S I tend to do brands evening sessions.

The police don't do anything around my way, so I should be fine ;)

I'm tempted by the toyo decat rather than ghetto, but if it's not much of a difference in sound then I may not bother!?!

I’m running a Toyo header and decat with a pz rear silencer and passes all the different-track limits, a fair bit heavier than a toyo catback But with the toyo full system it was just too loud on full chatter and black flagged at Donny.
