Hi
Took my decat off a while ago and was going to put it up for sale. I notice a strange sound when tilting it, almost like sand grains. I had no issues with the unit but before I put it up for sale wanted to check.
Have a video but not able to attach via Tapatalk
Anyone had/seen this?

Re: RB dual resonator decat
Could be rust or the sound wadding broken up.
Rust in the back boxes is extremely common, especially with cars that have been regularly started, engine run at idle and then not driven.
The primary component of exhaust is water vapour, not helped by the engine running very rich from cold and not getting to a working temperature for ages at idle. With the exhaust not reaching normal operating temperatures at all if not driven and most of that water condensing inside the pipes, resonator and backbox.
This, and the rotary equivalent of bore washing, is why it does more harm than good to just run the engine, or to let the engine idle before driving off.
I'll get down off my soapbox now, as this may not apply to your car, but it may be that the only way to know what's making the noise is to shake the resonator over clean paper/sheet or connect to a vacuum cleaner, having emptied it first.

Re: RB dual resonator decat
That’s the weird thing i shook it in a clean driveway, nothing came out. Might just cut it and use it to add to my toyo to lower the noise.
I had it running with no issues, will put it up for 200 and see.

Re: RB dual resonator decat

Re: RB dual resonator decat
It looks like the sound-deadening was non-stainless wire wool, which is a bit cheapskate for a brand like Racing Beat.
Most use either stainless or ceramic these days
https://steelwooldirect.com/muffler-packing
Edit: Their website says they use stainless steel wool
http://www.racingbeat.com/RX8/Exhaust-D ... 16221.html
However, good quality stainless isn't magnetic and does rust away into small pieces...
I wonder if that's the difference between the V1 and V2 versions of the product

Re: RB dual resonator decat
I am guessing scrap metal? Was thinking of putting it on sale for £180.

Re: RB dual resonator decat
You could still sell it, as long as you're honest about the state of the packing.
Someone might have a use for it...
