Chambers Rotary Specialist, Hayling Island Portsmouth

Post by Koren »

Having some hot start issues, so thought I'd see if I could find whether new ignition components were included in the refurbished engine a previous owner had done. Receipt doesn't have much detail, so I googled the comparison name, hoping they'd have a website with details of what's included. Instead I found very little, but a few worrying sounding posts on this forum, but haven't found much detail still. Were they very dodgy? Is my 6k miles streetpported engine a lemon and/or not even a refurbished or ported one? I didn't get a compression test done as I was optimistic about the "new" engine

Hi Koren,
There have indeed been many worrying stories about the builder.
However before jumping to conclusions I would say get a compression test ASAP.
Once you have this information post it up and we will try and help.

And no the ignition isn't part of a rebuild, unless they paid extra. Also if they did pay extra I bet it’s fake cheap coils from EBay

Thanks, will look into getting one done. Anyone know what sort of stuff they were up to that gave them the bad rep?

The invoice isn't super clear but it has a listing for the engine, and "engine removal and fitting" for £1400 (before vat) in 2017. That seems low for purchasing a refurbished engine and having it fitted, so I'm wondering if maybe that's just the fitting, and the owner sourced his own engine? Don't know if anyone knows the car, it was owned by a Will Hawkins, maybe he was a member?

Simple. They can barely buy the seals for that money. So where are they making the profit? Answer must be they aren't replacing all the seals and reusing parts only fit for the bin.

Could you post up a photo of the invoice.
Blocking out owners details.

There’s was plenty of so called Rotary Specialists about.
Fortunately a lot of the no so good ones are no longer about.
Leaving just the good ones.

Once you’ve broken down the parts needed,
Oils Antifreeze etc
There’s no profit margin.
Hence why not so many parts that needed to be changed where.

If your comfortable doing a compression test yourself.
I could lend you a Rotary Comp Tester.
I’ve also got a set of D585s coils if you wish to try them.

Where in Sutton are you.

Here's the invoice :

Borrowing a tester would be handy actually, yeah, thanks. Are they any more complicated to use than a piston engine one? I'm down near Wrythe Green / Carshalton football ground

I personally don’t like invoices with no vehicle reg or mileage.

I’m up near the Butterchurn.
I sort out the tester and arrange to drop it off
Possibly Thursday I’m on lates till then.

There’s plenty of info on YouTube.
Or do a search on here.
Best do a cold test first.
Warm the Rex up then do a hot test.

...still going after 2 years+. Could be a record for a Chamber's 'refurb'.
Note refurb, not rebuild.

Does the "24 month warranty on engine block" just refer to the coat of blue paint?

I used to think that "Chambers Rotary" was quite a clever name for a rotary engine specialist, focusing on "Chambers" rather than "Cylinders".

However, it's much more boring than that, just the guys name is James Chambers, also traded as Solent Rotary

I hadn't thought of that before, but searching here for "Chambers" came up with a lot of results for combustion chambers etc
