air con compressor diagnostics

Post by AndyBrad »

Ok so i have the user manual and i cant find much in the way of this.

Ive recently replaced my magnetic clutch after this happened to the one RR fitted.

https://photos.app.goo.gl/y36CacphqahNuMWF7

however i cant seem to get the 12v to it.

ac is on and the fuse in the passenger footwell is ok and ive swapped the relay between that and the rear window to no avail. Anything else to try as im stuck?

The PCM will only engage the compressor drive in the correct conditions.

Are you looking for it to be engaged or are you trying to inject voltage to do it manually?

it to be engaged.
magnet is ok but the signal to it i want to test.

so set air con on, hot or cool with max flow. it should pulse 12v every 20s but i cant get it to do anything on the drive.

so basically its low on gas. I couldnt test the wiring that i thought was damaged from the relay to the magnet. But if you short the pins on the pressure switch near the coolant tank its all good.

Just need to get it recharged now. Thanks for the help :)

OK folks. New compressor and can get about 180g of gas into it before the rearmost oring blows and it sounds like a jet engine.
Had several new orings on it with no luck.
Any thoughts?

if its blowing the o ring with so little gas then you may have a bad pipe? is it the correct bolt? if the bolt is too long it could bottom out before securing the pipe...is there any debris in the hole the bolt fits into causing the same issue?
is it blowing the o ring on regas or when its running?...what pressure is it at?
who is regassing it?and what equipment is he using?

I don't know anything about pressures. He had some kit with a manifold with some gauges on and a tank on a scale.
He would gas it up then run the engine to suck it through. At this point the oring blew.

i had a problem once with my scale on my machine going out of calibration and it put a massive overload in a car which then blew from the pressure release valve on the compressor, there does not appear to be a relief valve on the rx8 pump.

what pressure was the high pressure gauge at when it blew?...there are 2 gauges on the manifold, high pressure, usually red and a low pressure gauge ,usually blue....when gassed with the engine off they both should read around 5 bar...when its running the low side falls a little and the high side climbs,my 8 gets to around 10 bar...it fluctuates a little, but around that. if the high side rises rapidly then it can be a blockage but usually caused by the electric fan not running.
we need to know what the high side gauge was reading when it blew to help the diagnosis.

So back on this. i popped to kwik fit the other day to get it regassed. i figured that they might know what was going off with their machine. Gassed it up all ok apparently.

turned the car on and filled the place with refrigerant.

I cant get anyone to look at all so im going to grab some gauges and look at stuff. however before i do im thinking the following. Either an air leak on the low pressure side drawing in air and allowing to over pressurise the high side or the system has a blockage. Im thinking the latter so it would be prudent to change the condenser? Is there much risk in getting a second hand one?

Cheers
