Re: Low emission E10 fuel
I'm on my 5th tank of E10 on the Vectra and it doesn't mind it whatsoever. I'm getting 40-50mpg tanks based on normal usage, just as I was beforehand. But then it's a late 90's naturally aspirated 4pot designed to run on anything from brazilian 100% ethanol to American whizzbang juice.
That said I still think if you have a modern small displacement turbo car or something specialist then not using it for a few months might be an idea until we have a better idea of what the effects can be regarding cost vs. efficiency.

Re: Low emission E10 fuel
V power has always been my choice. I remember back in maybe 08 or something using normal for a bit as people said it made no difference but i always found the car better with it. Ran smoother and I always got 20-25 miles more to the tank so felt like a no-brainer to me. However back then the difference was 7p to V-power.
I was half tempted to go find another shell petrol station but I had a long journey so went with the E10. It didn't feel all that bad to be fair but then I was mostly doing motorway cruising, and I'd just been in a loud kart so maybe my perception was a bit off.
Here is a question for you techies. Is E10 higher octane than standard petrol? I know before I saw ethanol used to up the octane in some places like Tesco. I know premix lowers octane so is the higher octane of E10 a good thing for premix? It's very possible I am talking crap, but I hope maybe there is something to my ponderings.

Re: Low emission E10 fuel
E10 could potentially have a higher octane in it if they just took normal E5 fuel and bunged in 5% ethanol
however Shell & BP don't miss a trick and the octane rating partly comes from an additive pack they blend into the fuel
so they reduce the additive pack content to save cash and use the ethanol to maintain the octane rating
its different fuel basically

Not necessarily, it depends where one lives....
Mr Esso wrote:Although our pumps have E5 labels on them, our Synergy Supreme+ 99 is actually ethanol free (except, due to technical supply reasons, in Devon, Cornwall, North Wales, North England and Scotland). Re: Low emission E10 fuel
One thing for sure increased E10 fuel cost is just the tip of the iceberg with a potential scheme for a road usage charge being considered EV`S are going to ultimately be the target to recover lost fuel duty and VED charges - have just seen this with a third of households having no off street parking.
Hampshire Council - cable licensing for a cable across the foot path when charging and they are not the only one considering it:
"Currently an EV charging cable does not require a licence. However, as policies are reviewed and updated this may change in the future."
Will motor insurance companies have to raise premiums to include any compensation cost from tripping injuries if someone comes a cropper with a cable, I mean you could suffer a severe whiplash injury from tripping over a cable in the dark!
A cable protector would help as long as you can screw it down to the pavement.
Will Increased electricity charge rates be under consideration for charging your car at home etc
There is a future band wagon there to jump on.

Esso Super is only 5p more than E10 at my local, at 138.99. I'm going there to fill up this afternoon.

Re: Low emission E10 fuel
To expand on this point Del I think the only way they can recover the tax lost on fuel duty is to roll out road pricing, as a consequence you'll have a black box fitted to your car that monitors position, speed and location and charges accordingly
naturally this will mean the powers that be will now know if you're speeding or not and where you are ( or at least where your car is)
so this may take the shine off lekky cars somewhat
unless its rolled out for all cars and the duty taken off the fuel of course , which could happen
what I suspect is that there will be a period when you have ICE thats taxed on fuel and BEV thats taxed via GPS
should be interesting
time to get working on my patented GPS blocker that fits any car and sends a dummy signal that I'm just off to the shops at 29mph all the time

Not wishing to jump the gun but put me down for a couple please with further orders to follow!
Next years EU regulation that all new cars sold in the EU will have a speed limiter fitted (ie Intelligent Speed Assistance) will also include electronic data gathering to record what you were doing and where during your time driving.
It has been trialled in many EU member states with one of the many benefits pointed out that "it will help to avoid speeding tickets"
Awesome!

Re: Low emission E10 fuel
All cars will also have a switch or setting to disable the speed limit or set it at any level desired. Having it set automatically is I think considered too dangerous. eg: motorway road works with an average speed limit or Smart motorways still show as 70 mph on my Google Earth sat nav so unless there is a way to signal changes in speed limits cars could be driving at 70 mph when the limit is much lower.Delanor wrote: ↑Wed Sep 22, 2021 10:09 amNot wishing to jump the gun but put me down for a couple please with further orders to follow!

Re: Low emission E10 fuel
The EU eventual aim is for regulation that you will not be able to override it ie. your car will not allow you to exceed the speed limit!ChrisHolmes wrote: ↑Wed Sep 22, 2021 11:52 pm

Re: Low emission E10 fuel
We're going a bit off-topic here but maybe they will settle on the compromise that some cars, maybe not the family hatchbacks, will have the facility to over-ride but it will be logged in the system.Delanor wrote: ↑Thu Sep 23, 2021 6:29 amThe EU eventual aim is for regulation that you will not be able to override it ie. your car will not allow you to exceed the speed limit!ChrisHolmes wrote: ↑Wed Sep 22, 2021 11:52 pm

On the RX8 and many other cars today, if you switch off the DSC then this writes an event in the PCM that can later be read by Accident Investigation when they're examining the wreckage.

I had heard that the PCM is a snitch, but didn't know that it happened in that circumstance. Thanks for clarifying Dave.

Re: Low emission E10 fuel
I honestly cannot see any difference using E10 fuel the performance seems to be the same I cannot speak for any fuel consumption change as I have always worked on the basis that with the RX-8 I drive it and when it needs fuel I put more in it and then continue to drive it. all I know is that it cannot compete with the 50 mpg my Karoq achieves.

Re: Low emission E10 fuel
Yes, you also have to be a bit careful, here in loverly Norfolk some of the Esso stations sell 97 octane which is E5. I think from reading arround if it says 99 octane on the pump it's E0 (although they can't say it!), if it's 97 it's E5.fishywick wrote: ↑Tue Sep 21, 2021 1:23 pmNot necessarily, it depends where one lives....Mr Esso wrote:Although our pumps have E5 labels on them, our Synergy Supreme+ 99 is actually ethanol free (except, due to technical supply reasons, in Devon, Cornwall, North Wales, North England and Scotland). I wouldn't be too worried with E10 in an '8 anyway, they're not too responsive to octane numbers for timing and E10 burns cleaner.
