Replacing steering uj
Wondering how difficult this job is? I've had play in the steering for a long time, but just lived with it, but now I'm really keen to get it sorted, is it possible for a novice, or how much would it be at a garage?

Re: Replacing steering uj
"Play in the steering" isn't a common problem with the UJ, they normally just get stiff.

Have you checked the rest of the steering joints, wheel bearing and rack?

Re: Replacing steering uj
it is a possible failure mode, just not a common one on rx8s.
its easy enough to check, but it takes 2 people, one to wobble the wheel and one to watch the uj

Re: Replacing steering uj
and
The UJ would be the last thing I would suspect for play, but easily checked with the rest of the potential culprits. Get a friend to help and start wiggling!

Re: Replacing steering uj
Hopefully somone will be able to confirm this for me, the play in the wheel is what you see in the video, presumably the should be zero play in the uj? //cloud.tapatalk.com/s/5e5a7a89e57 ... 145009.mp4

Re: Replacing steering uj
Looking at the video I would say the uj is shot.

Ahha!
It's always nice to get a second opinion , so to the original question, is it a pig of a job, or cheapish to get done at a garage?

Re: Replacing steering uj
Think the uj new is around £150 would imagine you're looking at 1 to 2 hours labour, but never done it myself on an rx8 but access doesn't look too bad, battery box out and air pump out to give better access

Re: Replacing steering uj
There isn't a blank section on either spline so you must ensure that everything goes back the way it came off.

Re: Replacing steering uj
my research says its part number is:
NE5132850
which also comes up as mk3 mx5 uj
so this should fit.

Re: Replacing steering uj
I had exactly the same issue with play in my UJ. I got a v good condition replacement from BigPete for MUCH less than a new one.
The issue for me was fitting, a local mechanic tried but was unable to free the old one.
I took it to Rotary Revs who managed to get it off and fit the replacement for £120
