URGENT - compression tester
Please guys can anyone help.
Need to borrow a compression tester urgently to help out a fellow owner who is not a member.
I will pay for all postage there and back first class recorded and for it's hire; just really need it soon.
He is thinking of scrapping and I am trying to get him to do a rebuild.
Some instructions would also be helpful.
Thanks.
Ranjan.

Re: URGENT - compression tester
Pop the air box back and up (no need to unplug MAF etc).
Reach under it, and between the AC belt - unplug the crank position sensor electrical plug.
Spark and fuel disabled, is now ready for comp test.
A plug out of each rotor, top or bottom doesn't matter.
Throttle pedal up or down, doesn't really matter either.

Re: URGENT - compression tester
Just for clarification, disconnecting the ESS doesn't make any difference to the compression.
However, it does prevent the coils being triggered which could otherwise interfere with the tester readings.
It also means that you don't have to floor the throttle pedal to prevent the engine trying to start.

Re: URGENT - compression tester
Where is your friend? There may be someone close by with a tester.
An alternative way to access the plugs is to take the PS wheel off.
My broadband is down currently but once it’s up I will scan my testers instructions and post them up. If you cannot get the ESS off then tuck all the ignition leads up out the way of the sensor cable and floor the throttle before spinning the engine over which cuts off the fuel supply. The engine needs to be hot for the test.

Re: URGENT - compression tester
or you could just pull the fuel pump 20A fuse from the underbonnet fusebox, no need to disconnect anything else

Re: URGENT - compression tester
you need to stop the coils firing, it messes with the reading. hence ess disconnection.

"disconnecting the ESS doesn't make any difference to the compression.

Shouldn't that be: "DOES prevent the coils being triggered" ? fixed using my new powers.(Chris)
Because, it does disable fuel and spark...

"just pull the fuel pump 20A fuse from the underbonnet fusebox, no need to disconnect anything else"
Can work, but also the HT voltage can interfere with some testers it seems. Also, you don't really want the chance of igniting any fuel anywhere ... also it's not really healthy for the coils to try to discharge without a decent path to ground. If you can do it properly (which is very little effort anyway), do it properly.

Re: URGENT - compression tester
Well, that was a waste of time after Dan’s valiant help; am in bed in New York with flu and the tester is in my luggage here in the apartment
He is going to contact Ryan Rotary and get him to sort it out.
Thank you all for help and instructions, may be of use next time.
