Another cat stolen.

Post by 98of400 » Thu Feb 06, 2020 7:24 pm

Watch out guys. Just come back to my car to find the cat has been stolen. Underneath wrecked, bent cross members etc. Was parked in a hotel car park in broad daylight. This happened at the Marks Tey Hotel in Colchester, just across from the Bungalow Diner.

A perfectly cherished 40th Anniversary now for the scrapper. Gutted.

Absolute wankler

What do you mean car is for the scrapper? Is the damage that bad?

Gutted for you, that word above is supposed to say w4nkers but the forum autocorrects it.

Hotel car parks seem to be a target, I know there have been cat thefts from the Holiday Inn near me.

how much is a OEM cat worth then? as this seems like a lot of hassle for the £50-80 I'd imagine they are worth

Cross members are easy to replace as if it's the two that go across the prop tunnel

Cost to supply and fit OEM cat plus exhaust and lamda sensors and cross members will exceed the 65% of value write off threshold I reckon. Will see what happens, but be careful where you leave your cars.

You can negotiate with the insurance company. Say you'll supply what parts you can to bring the cost down. I'm sure Bigpete can sort you out the corssmembers, lamda sensors and possibly exhaust if needs be. Leaving just the OEM cat/fitting to be covered by the insurer.

Very sorry to hear that. I hope the hotel can supply CCTV.

For everyone else, The Marks Tey Hotel is not a place you'd expect this to happen.

It's beginning to sound like cars aren't safe anywhere. What a shame.

This is truly shocking. Like New Duke, I know this hotel and car park well. It's not a place I would expect this to happen, and in my home town. It means nowhere is safe. In broad daylight too :(

If you make an insurance claim you can take the settlement but buy back the Car as salvage which shouldn’t be more than a few hundred quid. The car will always be classed as a Cat D (I think) write off but it would be a shame to see a good example of a rare car scrapped

hotel car parks are probably quieter and cars left there for longer periods of time.

I wonder if it'd be possible with an aftermarket alarm sensor to dye pack the underside of the car.. Probably too much heat/body bounce to do that effictively but it would be funny to watch the idiots get turned blue upon jacking up.

I'd be more tempted to set an air bag down there as an IED...

I'm nervous now and don't even have a cat, because I'd assume they'd try their luck and cut off whatever they find.

And to do that to a 40th Anniversary too. Utter lowlifes.

Why would they pick on a RX8, there must be far easier cars to get underneath?
Hope you can get it sorted and back on the road soon.

A lot of front wheel drive cars, with transverse engines, have their cats close-coupled to the manifold, higher in the engine bay and difficult to access from underneath.

RWD cars have theirs in the middle underneath... #-o

Potentially because they know that the RX8 cats are made of sterner stuff than most - hence the higher resale values. Like comparing stealing a fiesta to stealing a bentley in the grand scheme of things.

Steal 2 or 3 prius cats, or steal 1 RX8 cat for the same payout...

Curious as to why a general warning and notification should be in the member's area? Surely we'd want everyone who owns an RX8 to be able to see this info?
