Rx8 misfired and died
Was driving around yesterday, revved engine out and then car started misfiring sounded like it was running on one rotor. Got to traffic lights and car stalled and wouldn't start again sounded like it's was just spinning one rotor. Pretty sure I flooded it from all the cranking.
Was having issues with cold starts (taking abit longer) but I put that down to the cold weather.
Going to try pull the spark plugs (7k on them) out now, it's got d585r coils with 20k on them
Any insight would be appreciated

Re: Rx8 misfired and died
Could be a ignition problem or fuel pump, or ESS, though the first thing I would look for is oil on the MAF.

Re: Rx8 misfired and died
That upgraded fuel pump can overheat the low-speed resistor, located by the Secondary Air System unit.
Plug in a ODBII reader (or ELM327 dongle and Torque App) and check for any Pending codes.
Pending codes are events that will only light the if they occur again in the next drive cycle, but they can be important

Pull the D585’s off and try standard c coils

Re: Rx8 misfired and died
Pulled the plugs and checked spark from each of them
T1 isn't firing at all and L1 seems weak
Rear is all good

Re: Rx8 misfired and died
If the dwell has already been changed to match the D585s then it would soon kill stock coils, for anything other than a very short start-up test.
The weakest link in D585 setups are the loom adapters, so disconnect and visually check each end.

Re: Rx8 misfired and died
I’ve just pulled a set of d585’s off a car that ran fine until it hit 6k then it just didn’t pull from there, seems like the coils were failing under load. Car hadn’t been mapped for them so swapped to c coils and it drove spot on. I’ve now got 4 sets of D585 coils that have failed in one way or another.

Re: Rx8 misfired and died
Loom seems all ok, was the L1 coil pack which wasn't firing not t1
It's a rotary revs kit so will contact them
Thanks for all the help
Don't understand why it wouldn't start still, just kept turning over

Re: Rx8 misfired and died
On cranking I believe the engine only fires the leading coils (I could be wrong though) it might be worth while swapping the leading for the trailing just to test, the car will run fairly well on just leading coils and if a trailing coil has failed or is failing you probably wouldn't notice.

Re: Rx8 misfired and died
Sounds very very similarly to what I experienced when mine failed.

Re: Rx8 misfired and died
Maybe a dry connection within the wiring loom causing intermittent faults and weak sparks?

Re: Rx8 misfired and died
Will check wiring loom , plugs only covered 7k shouldnt be too bad to lose complete spark
Got it earthed to negative terminal as per instructions
Going to see if rotors have any compression

Re: Rx8 misfired and died
Update on this, one leading plug still not firing, swapped over the wiring harness to put a trailing coil as leading and it sparked
Rotary revs have said all the coils are fine and checked out :S

Could be a loose wire

Re: Rx8 misfired and died
They've checked everything leads and harness too all checked out
Checked the wires a few times all connected properly
Could ESS mess up and not send a signal to some coils?

Re: Rx8 misfired and died
The ess connects to the PCM, if this signal is uneven then that causes a misfire code.
The PCM fires the coils.

Re: Rx8 misfired and died
sounds like you've already diagnosed a faulty wiring loom to me
on this site is a wiring diagram sowing what ECM pin relates to what connector plug so I'd use that to confirm that the wire resistance between the coil plug and the ECM socket is no more than 3 ohms

Re: Rx8 misfired and died
Took kks sports cat off today and can hear it move around when I shake it, running a rb header with no secondary air pump must've taken its toll and blocked it up
