Tein Street Basis Z - wrong instructions?
Hello guys, I've recently installed the Tein Street Basis Z coilovers in my RX-8 and i have a feeling that the setting provided in the instruction leaflet might be wrong. Its stated that the front shocks should be set 35mm from the thread to the thingy that holds the spring, and on the rear 45mm. I've carefully measured that space, and I can safely say that the front is lower than it should be, as I now scrape the speed bump in front of the car park. Should the front spring have 45mm as well? Can I readjust this without taking apart the suspension again?

Re: Tein Street Basis Z - wrong instructions?
Should be able to adjust them on the car.
No harm in raising the front if you want but suspension heights an individual thing so you can set it for whatever suits your driving

Where did you buy the Teins from?
Some dealers, such as Mazda Rotary Parts, are happy to discuss any installation/setup issues with customers

You should find a set of instructions on the internet I would think as well.
Just print them off

Re: Tein Street Basis Z - wrong instructions?
Throw them in the bin
I think these are the units that a lot of RX-8 owners have had problems with. ( do a search on our forum )
What can you expect when the car set costs in the region of £100 to manufacture
If you want to do more than drive to the shops with no passengers and nothing in the boot you may want to consider a refund.
I believe a lot of people have had problems right from new with the rear springs banging as they coil bind
Alternatively lift the front to 45 and the rear to 55 and live with cheap crap.
Sorry for being so truthful
Regards
Pete

Re: Tein Street Basis Z - wrong instructions?
I had tein Street basis
I bought them from Eddie
No issues at all
I know at least 10 more people with street basis no issue they are only high adjustable no damping and you have to reuse your oem top mounts.

Re: Tein Street Basis Z - wrong instructions?
Thank you very much for your answers, I guess I will just raise the front a bit. In spite of the speed bump scraping, I'm happy with how they perform / hold thru high speed bends; and while they are a cheap set up, are they really worse than OEM suspensions?
PS: I got them from RacingBeatEurope, like most of the things I buy for the car.

Re: Tein Street Basis Z - wrong instructions?
Is there any place from where I can get the strut mounts new, preferably Mazda?
And this might sound like a stupid question, but if I readjust the height, do I have to loosen the nut on the top of the strut?

Re: And to help enjoy the new Tein coilovers to the max
Sorry for hijacking this post, but I'm in desperate need of advice. I have the Street Basis Z (the cheap s**t) and I want to raise the front a bit. If i do that, will I mess with the spring's tension? Do i need to loosen the top nut on the strut mount? Please help me, I need the car like crazy for next week.

With coilovers you dont adjust height by compressing the spring. You adjust at the lower mountKamys wrote: ↑Fri Jan 31, 2020 10:19 pmSorry for hijacking this post, but I'm in desperate need of advice. Actually... with the cheap Teins, you do in fact adjust the height by altering the preload on the spring. Yeh..

PLEASE DO NOT LOOSEN THE TOP NUT ON THE STRUT AS THIS IS DANGERIOUS IF THE NUT COMES OFF AND HITS YOU IN THE FACE !!Kamys wrote: ↑Fri Jan 31, 2020 10:19 pmSorry for hijacking this post, but I'm in desperate need of advice. (I am shocked nobody told you this!)
As said above the kit you have is fully hight adjustable and if you look at the attachment you will see in number ONE the adjustment rings and in number TWO the spanners that came with the kit.
Also please disregard the comments about your kit, as it is a fully developed excellent starter kit and we have sold a huge ammout for the RX-8 and never had a complaint about quality or a return.
Moderators as this thread is now off course it may be an idea to split the thread and retitle, also cleaning it up.

Re: And to help enjoy the new Tein coilovers to the max
Just revisited this and just to clarify as this post seems to have caused an issue.
Unfortunately the thread above went completely away from Rods Tein Active Monosport thread starter and turned into a thread about the Tein Basis Kit.
The Tein Basis kit is the kit I referred to above in that it is a good starter kit and that we have NEVER received a complaint about the many Tein Basis Kits we have sold.
I hope this clears up any confusion or misunderstandings!

Re: And to help enjoy the new Tein coilovers to the max
I have flex z. I think the main thing when installing is to ensure you loose fit them first then lower the body weight before tightening bushes. Apart from that I haven't had any issues. Another thing I found is the twin manual states to preload. I thought I knew what I was doing and set them to zero preload. And found that it caused no end of issues. Then preload to the manual specs and it was all goodmi60o0 wrote:I used to have two times tein Street basis I never had a issue with.

Re: Tein Street Basis Z - wrong instructions?
Hello again and thank you so much for your response, however I still don't get some things. I have badly drawn how the Basis Z presents itself as I think some people don't know that its height doesn't adjust...in that usual manner. The only adjustment you can make with these is by tightening or releasing the spring using those 2 rings.
https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid ... =3&theater
Now, my main concern is that when I raise the car, the tension applied to the top bush (top blue piece) might exceed what the bush can take.
I've spend about 2 weeks now trying to find the upper strut mount (or spring hat, as I found it in some places) OEM, and any after market piece doesn't resemble the part that i have on the car. I would settle for the rubber seat from under the strut mount, as the one i have is quite worn and cracked, and I think it would improve vibration and noise cancellation.
If anybody knows a place from where I could get these parts I'll be greatfull.

Re: Tein Street Basis Z - wrong instructions?
IIRC that top "blue" bushing is only under tension when the unit is off the car.
Once fitted and on the deck, those bushings are only under forces from the damper motion (right?) because the spring tension is between the bottom spring perch and the chassis of the car where the top of the unit mounts.
I may have some rear OEM bushings on some old shocks.

Re: Tein Street Basis Z - wrong instructions?
I've got plenty of bushings now, just received them today. Its the rubber on the bottom of the mount...the one that you seat the spring on that I would like to replace. Like the rubber on this picture:

PS: great eye opener what you said, now i get it XD
Edit: I found this, the rubber top of the ''dust boot'' is what i'm looking for. Its where the spring seats.

The rubber top as you term it is part of the dust boot as far as I know.
There are mounts in the UK that won’t cost you $82 shipping.

On what basis are they not for the RX8? Not all those suppliers can have the application wrong.

Re: Tein Street Basis Z - wrong instructions?
The ones that have the images there, if you take a closer look are for different makes or models, and for the next 3 google pages all suppliers sell just the strut bushes, but not the dustboot / rubber mount of the mount. The only market place that has them is the Atkins Rotary that has the delivery price twice the price of the part.
