New safety recall notice - fuel tank

Post by Paul_13 » Fri Jan 24, 2020 2:28 pm

I had a recall letter through in the post today.

Safety recall on the fuel tank.

Thankfully the rx8 was a donor car. 2004 231.

Think this is an old one, or year specific, checked yesterday on the mazda UK site and nothing outstanding on mine(2007), already had the seal and airbags done.
Led side lights, purple Led interior & puddle lights, custom stainless steel grills, Ryan rotary performance coils & sohn, high spec rear drop links, HME engine rebuild at 50k, Borla exhaust, racing beat revi intake including scoop, quick shifter, alloy filler cap, pz alloys, suspension & spoiler, japspeed rear toe arms & hardrace rear lower camber arms.

Yep, this is an old recall, see related topic in the Members' area here;

I got my reminder a few days ago too (I think it's the 3rd time  ). I keep putting it off as I have upgraded my pump and didn't really want Mazda messing about after hearing some of the bad work by various Mazda dealers, but I will need to bite the bullet and get it sorted before the Spring.

I got a recall notice today (or yesterday), haven't opened it yet, but I'd guess this is what it is ... I thought it was probably a repeat of the passenger airbag recall that I've neglected/put off having done for over a year too.

It would be better to get that recall done for the airbags - there's the possible impact on insurance cover to consider.

R3 Aurora Blue Mica - Racing Brake calipers, rotors and steel brake lines - Racing Beat exhaust - TARGA2 sensors - Lockwood grilles - blue LEDs - side and fog light upgrades - window tints - Eibach spacers
And still three gears left...

same a combination of not really having the time and a desire to take my car off the road soon anyway and it's fallen by the wayside.
Thanks, Stu

Chris, if I remember correctly Tony replaced his fuel pump before the recall, then got a reimbursement from mazda on providing his receipt.

Yes that’s correct and I advised the dealer of this therefore the only work they did was to replace the main sealing rings and did not touch the actual pump body itself.

I have recently had a recall for the 04 rx8,that i originally bought just for the engine,as it was very likely to fail the mot due to rear arch corrosion.
My son and i sorted the welding, got mot and it's still going strong now,10 months later.
Anyway, back to the recall. It has 4 recalls on it,passenger airbag,2 fuel issues and best of all, front lower arms. Having just the arms done will be worth about twice as much as the car is worth in spares alone, obviously it is booked in to be sorted, not bad for a car that cost peanuts in the first place.

Re: New safety recall notice - fuel tank

My nearest dealer is now Ballyroberts Mazda in Newtownabbey, 47 miles round trip, since the actual local dealership (Shaws of Bangor) declined to renew their franchise last year.

They have finally given me a date (11-12th Feb) to do the recalls, as they've been waiting for the lower suspension arms to come back in Mazda Europe stock.

Given that it's going to take at least two days, they've agreed to provide a courtesy car but "it has to be on our insurance"

Basically I have to take out temporary insurance, for which my ins co charges a minimum of £28 for up to one weeks cover.

I challenged that with both the Dealer and with Mazda Customer Relations and got nowhere.

Mazda says that "the car is being provided free" which is all that is required by the recall, and that any insurance cover costs is not down to them.

My previous experience has been in the south east of England where Dealers have to compete for business and customers wouldn't stand for this crap. It's not so easy when the next closest Dealer is over in Lisbon (over 50 miles) and has rep for breaking cars.

I suspect that the Ballyroberts dealer has courtesy cars that are normally provided to customers while their car is having accident repair work, so all associated costs and already being handled by their (customers) insurance policy.

Anyway, I need to find the drill, guide and instructions, as they'll have to modify the new arms to fit my Racing Beat ARB drop-links

The Service Manager has already asked me to brief their Technician before I leave them with the car.

Hello all, my 04 car is going in for fuel, airbags and lower arms on tuesday. Does anyone know of any reason why i can't ask for the old arms back, assuming they come off in one piece. I guess you have probably worked out why i would want them back, but i am going to claim i want them for testing ,in order to understand why they might fail.
My question is,does the dealership have a legal obligation to scrap them to avoid them being used again, thanks, rob.
