Tyre Pressure Maintenance
Hi All,
Did a search but couldn't see anything so I thought I'd start a new topic. Recently my tyre pressure gauge and inflator have gone faulty so I'm looking into new options and wondered what people use and their experiences with each.
1) Tyre Pressure inflator
I bought one once I found how inaccurate pressure gauges at petrol stations can be. I went for the Michelin Rapid 12262 Tyre Inflator and it served me ok but I found out about halfway through it's life that the pressure wasn't that accurate. Actually I realised that as the unit got hot that the pressure was off more and more, so by the time I got to the 4th tyre the pressure was further off.
2) Tyre pressure gauge
So I bought a tyre pressure gauge ( Race Rx0014 tyre pressure gauge ) to double check with. I over pump with the inflator slightly and then use the gauge to manually let out air and adjust down to the exact pressure. This has worked well over the last 3 years giving exactly the right "feel" in the car.
So now I am thinking of just replacing the tyre pressure inflator with the updated model of what I have, and the same gauge again. But.... for the inflator I was thinking of a foot pump instead, so to not have to start the car for minor adjustments, and possibly a digital tyre pressure gauge ( such as the one in the club shop ) . Anyone have any experiences of these, and any other options I've not thought of ?

I use the supplied Mazda tyre inflator, gauge is reasonably accurate ( tends to slightly under-read pressure ).
So I inflate to 2.4 bar and then let some air out with the gauge.

If you don't have one, they are relatively inexpensive, you may find one of the traders on here are selling.
The tyre repair fluid is likely to be out of date now, but just buy some tyre sealant from ECP or eBay.

I know of that bag but thought it only contained emergency tyre repairs. I've not looked inside since I got the car 12 years ago....

I know where those are as I got stuck in a farmer's field once ( in the snow ) and I had to be towed out.That'll be with the emergency tow hooks!
They did keep coming out though. Apparently I didn't screw them deep enough.... ! ( Cough cough )

trouble with tyre sealer is once you use it the tyre is scrap as it cant be repaired properly with sealer in it....i got a spacesaver for mine and the bag is on the garage shelf.

That is a common misconception, the eyes that screw into the front and rear are for towing another car or being towed. Lost in translation is a phrase that comes to mind here.
The wording is poor because the second sheet whilst using the term “tie down eyelets” is in fact also showing how to attach them in order to tow the vehicle. Substitute the word towing eye in certain places and the sheet makes sense.
Under the car there are two lugs with holes at the rear which are shown as jacking points, but I think are the tie down points for shipping, I use them to sit into axle stands as in the attached photo. Taking out the blanks in the rear bumper and front grill to attach the eyes for shipment tie down runs the risk of damage to paintwork and doing this on every car at the speed they load ships would I think be impractical.
From practical regular experience across the membership of starting flooded cars by towing we know that a properly screwed in eye is more than capable of towing the car without damage to the bumper.

Can't add any more to what has already been said, as I use the Mazda OEM one. Seems accurate enough to me.
Only thing I can add is that the cigarette lighter adaptor is powered on when the key is in IGN position, but without the engine running. So unless you're inflating a tractor tyre then you'll be fine doing all 4 tyres with the engine off without draining the battery

Wouldn't of thought it's an mot failure not to have it, it is not a requirement to have a spare wheel (but if you have one it has to be road legal)

Is it not? I can't remember where I read that. But not having a spare and not having a repair kit of some description seems like it would logically be a failure of having a road worthy car? Or do they just presume you're able to have emergency breakdown cover and thus it doesn't matter if you only have 3 tyres that function?

A car without a spare wheel or repair kit, is perfectly roadworthy, until you have a puncture.
*If* you carry a spare wheel then the tyre must be road legal and correctly inflated, the same as if it was fitted.
In France (and some other countries) it's a legal requirement to carry spare bulbs, which makes sense as bulb failure is statistically more likely than a puncture.
I've had more fan/drive belt failures than punctures in over 45 years of driving, but they don't make carrying a spare fan belt a requirement...
