Phone holder

Post by Finalboss »

What phone holders are people using to hold the phone on the dash for using as a sat nav etc?

Not on the dash but next to the headunit is the best option I've found aside from replacing the headunit itself with an Android unit (which I also did):
https://www.brodit.co.uk/brodit/vehicle ... 654306.htm

- Easy to reach
- Not too low if you only glance at it
- No loss of the windscreen area
- No loss of an air vent
- No faffing with tablets (not sure that mod is possible in the R3 anyway)
- Relatively cheap and removable if needed
- Out of the line of sight of passing police cars
- Easy to run a power cable to without draping it across half the dashboard

I've tried a few different methods but am settled on this one.

I have the brodit as well but mounted a bit higher.

https://www.brodit.co.uk/brodit/vehicle ... 653301.htm

Only annoyance in this config is that you can't see the temperature setting so have to kind of move your head over the central console to see what it's set at. Not advisable whilst driving ....

One other tip I suggest. The Brodit is good as it comes in two bits. The clip and the holder. So if you change for phone you can just replace the phone part, and if you change the car then you can change the clip. But of course the latter part wouldn't apply because why would you change from an RX8 ?

Lastly it's a bit more expensive but next time I'll go for an adjustable holder. The phone specific ones are an exact fit, so for my phone I have to take off the case when I use it. Not the end of the world bit a slight annoyance.

I use a vent mount, like this one https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00VTQEVZO. Holds the phone by magnet and I just put the thin metal plate / disc inside the phone case, without needing to stick it on.
Handy, 'cos it works for both the cars and both mine and my wife's different phones with no bother. Does cover a vent & a bit of the temperature display, depending on the size of the phone.

The only one I've tried that puts the phone in a non wobbly position I like is this one I found that sits in the CD slot, seeing as I don't use CDs (Have a Grom link thing) it can just stay there, kind of puts the phone where you'd expect a more modern HU to be, can have the phone sideways or upright.

I have one of these: https://www.iottie.com/Product/Detail/5 ... ield-Mount

It's a bit hefty on price, but I got fed up with ones that fell off etc.

Works very well though, I use it right down the bottom left of the windscreen, but can be dash mounted.

Ahhhh, car phones and CD slots. So retro and fondly remembered. Back when the RX8 looked like this:

We have one of these in each of three cars. https://www.halfords.com/technology/mob ... %20Holders
In the RX8 and the M3 have it mounted on the windscreen at the bottom right which obscures nothing and is easily operated when stationary!!!!!
No photos as its piddling down outside.
Just had a second look and the Red and Blue are £5 yet the black is £10!!!!

Saw your post and ordered one. Just used it: puts the phone in a perfect position. Thanks!
