Shock absorber boots

Post by Templ8 »

Mot will be due soon and all the shock boots/dust covers are split. Can't find them listed on the epc and all the online parts stores I've tried so far either have no stock or aren't listed.
Where have you got yours from?

Best to just get them from Mazda directly. They aren't too pricey.

Mazda Europe hasn't got any stock left, neither has MX5Parts https://www.mx5parts.co.uk/front-shock- ... -4090.html (yes, those are the same as ours) or the Club Shop https://shop.rx8oc.co.uk/RX-8_front_sus ... 72001.aspx

They aren't required for the MOT, so "split" isn't an issue for that.
If they're totally shredded then just cut the loose bits away with sharp knife and apply silicone grease to the exposed damper rods.

They don't exist on the rear shocks, only the front.

Ah rip. I'm sure someone said not too long ago they had some off Mazda after the club shop didn't have stock.

Individual dealers might have old stock still on their shelves, not showing on Mazda Europe inventory

There's very little point applying grease to the damper rods, the wiper seal will scrape it off anyway, dirt will stick to it, and all you'll do is basically stick what is now grinding paste right against the shaft and seal. Give them a wipe with some WD or a light oil if you must but otherwise leave them clean and dry.

Could you use the shock boots as fitted to motorcycle shocks.

Or failing that a old motorcycle inner tube cut to suit.

Tim at RX Motors had a set when I needed some. Might be worth dropping him a line.
