Checking the oil level at every fill up is as far as I remember official Mazda advice but the way that review is written is true journalistic verbology and basically crap.

Every second fill up. So says the manual.

Overly generous to describe Mr Shed as a journalist. He makes Doug DeMuro look informed.

Saw this as a post on facebook... To which one commenter who said the car is a "horrible thing" later went onto comment and I quote. "I've never known an engine to derate like my one did when it got hot. 2 hours on an Autobahn and it couldn't generate enough torque to accelerate in 6th gear." I never knew you were meant to use 6th for acceleration... I guess you start there and go back to first?

Helped no doubt by the massive warranty the yanks got and the fact that engine failures were significantly less because much of their driving is long straight roads as opposed to the stop/start that's the norm in these parts.

Conduct the same survey in Europe and those figures will be most likely be very different.

I think you have a point though Ian and in conjunction with our climate the rotary engine life here is probably much harder.

Oh I dunno. Think about the trouble some owners here have keeping their RX8 cool when it's 30 degrees for a few days a year.

Imagine what it's like in 38 degrees ambient (and 50+ on the tarmac) and you're crawling on the freeway. Every day for months. Keeping that Renesis below 115 degrees can be a real challenge. No wonder you won't see many 8s on the daily commute in CA, NV, TX, AZ or New Mexico.

Not to mention the strain that intense heat has on the tyres, brakes, belts, trim, paintwork etc.

Salty roads aside, we have it pretty good here :thumleft:

Especially as most US 8s were only fitted with a single oil cooler.

At l least their steering ujs don't get cooked by the exhaust manifold, being on the wrong side.

The RX8 is a bit of a shed staple, they have had one pretty much every year for the past 3 or 4 years now - and as has been said it's hilarious the number of people complaining about them having never owned one. I regularly see people from this forum (assumed at least as the same usernames) arguing their case - as have I - only to be told that "we're wrong" by some muppet who says it has the same amount of torque as a wet paper bag, yet hasn't actually driven one...

You occasionally get the S2000 guys praising it, but more often than not they adhere to the website's name pistonheads. They don't even seem to like the FD3S RX7...

It was nice, however, to see an R3 as a spotted for the first time on Pistonheads - there were some positive words said about 8s in that article, although they did still spout the normal "drinks a lot of oil - but not as fast as it drinks petrol!" rubbish...

Tbf they are absolute alcoholics when it comes to petrol but as regards oil consumption I find my own car to be pretty good.A 5L top up drum/bottle ( whatever you call it ) lasts me ages so I really cant complain.

Petrol on the other hand is just ridiculous  It's got to be one of the worst cars on the road in terms of bang for your buck.

On a round trip, Essex to/from the New Forest, in convoy with a Mini Cooper, my 8 used less than half the engine oil of the Mini.
Both cars had between 50-60k miles on the clock, and the Mini needed really expensive fully sync, while the 8 was happy on mineral, @ half the price.
Mini oil consumption was therefore >4x the 8, in £££s

You guys who think driving in the States is easier on cars have a halcyon view based on too many Route 66 films.
IT'S MURDER....
THE HEAT.
THE TRAFFIC.
THE BAD DRIVING STANDARDS.

Also, their attitude to the RX8 is a lot more informed in certain ways; there is a group of racing instructors here in California, 8 of us in total, and we all own a RX8; speaks volumes about the Yanks.

Ranjan.
