Re: And the compression results are in...
Also had a CEL when coming home from work yesterday. P2097 - post catalytic converter fuel trim bank 1 too rich. Apparently according to Silver Fern, they think my rear rotor has now given up completely, needless to say, it's not being driven now until the engine swap as the cat is still relatively new, so would like to keep it in good condition!

And there was me thinking I had a good reason to escape the MIL to be at some point over the weekend.
Good luck with this. Strip the old engine and share it's inside story!

Glad to hear you've saved it! I appreciate budgets aren't limitless and it's always good to hear someone working around that to come out good in the end.

Re: And the compression results are in...
That's what I'm hoping, need some good karma now! It's the last chance now. I'm afraid if anything goes wrong i.e. the replacement engine off Matt is poor, then it will have to be sold. That's worse case scenario. But hopefully it will see me through a couple of years until I can afford a proper rebuild. If the engine in mine is gone beyond repair, I'm thinking of making a nice desk ornament? We'll see, it's a low priority at the moment!

Re: And the compression results are in...
P2097 is normally associated with either a MAF or IAT sensor problem, or a leaking fuel injector.

Re: And the compression results are in...
Update:
Dwayne has had a chance to have a quick look over the engine today and it's not the best news. A fair amount is missing and beat up as you can see in the pictures. After speaking to the seller, he is adamant it will start and run fine, so with some reluctance I'm swapping the missing stuff from my current engine. I know it's a risk, but it's really the only option I have now. Dwayne is going to inspect sections of the engine (mainly the sump) and easily accessible parts to check for any warning signs and of all is ok, we're going ahead with the swap tomorrow! It's probably going to cost a bit more than expected but hopefully it'll be worth it. I'll keep you posted!
Thanks,
Joe

Those may just be lever marks from someone removing the front pulley in a lees than sympathetic way.

Re: And the compression results are in...
Let me know if you need any bits.
The one I got was whole so I have a selection of parts laying around.
Sorry it wasn't in better condition. I didn't actually look at it as I had to rush off. Fingers crossed for you.

Re: And the compression results are in...
I bought a used Alfa engine many years ago and it arrived in a similar state.
I rang the breakers yard that sold it and the Boss insisted that it was all good.
Just happens that I knew that they had 5 incoming phone lines, so I handed the phone to a colleague in the office, to ask about some nonsense he was looking for, while I rang in again from another desk.
This time someone else answered and I asked about the Alfa engine that had got beaten up. This guy was perfectly honest and said "Oh, you mean the one that fell off the crane while they were putting it on the pallet.."
At which point I said I'd hold for the Boss and signalled my mate to finish his call.
The Boss then came on the line and was most confused to be talking to me again, but eventually admitted that he'd been caught and agreed to refund the cheque payment, in full.
As it happens, while I couldn't use the damaged engine, so I gave it to a friend in the AROC and he got a good cylinder head off it, to replace his that had cracked.

Re: And the compression results are in...
Thanks all. To be fair, although the engine isn't in the state I imagined, he has agreed to refund £100 which I'll be putting towards Dwayne dismantling it and seeing if anything can be used. Best case, there are some good parts which can be used along with my original engine to make one decent engine. Worst case, I've lost a bit on the engine, the car gets SORN on the drive for roughly a year so I can save for a good rebuild/replacement engine. It's all in fates hands now! Cheers all for the help.

Re: And the compression results are in...
The front stack has been undone and partially removed while horizontal... there's a decent chance that the thrust/torrington bearings have slipped and will be crushed if reassembled which would write off a few internal parts.
Saying that it'll run is a load of BS. It needs some further disassembly at a bare minimum.

That's exactly what Dwayne said. Well, what'll be will be now. Hopefully some things are reusable on it!

Re: And the compression results are in...
Hopefully will find out the state of housings/rotors etc, and if luck's on my side (which it hasn't so far) then at least the engine will break even and may use it in a build.

Re: And the compression results are in...
Update time!
Dwayne is delving into that engine I bought to see if anything is usable on it. Today it seems as if my engine has had its final bow. Filled up, went for a short spirited drive and it stalled at idle when I was at a roundabout. And after bump starting it it won't idle at all now. I assume it's down to compression. One last roll of the dice as I've tried to seafoam it tonight to see of miracles can happen but not too hopeful! This may be the end of my RX-8 ownership I'm gutted to say. Love the car and would sell a kidney for it, but I still couldn't afford it! I'll let you know if a miracle happens. Thanks to everyone on here for the great advice, hopefully it won't be the last, not sure whether to SORN it until I can afford a new engine (which will be a year at least), or sell it to someone if anyone wants to use it as a project, as much as it would hurt me.
Thanks,
Joe

Re: And the compression results are in...
Check the little vac line at the from of the air box isn't pinched. Mine wouldn't idle when I had nicked it putting the air box back in.
