In the Warrington area not a million miles from Chester you have a long established rotary expert Pip Gardner at WGT Auto Developments. Give him a call fir a second opinion.

Thanks, will do today. May end up taking it to somewhere like Rotary Revs as they offer finance so I could get it done sooner. Will check WGT out first.

Right, after some investigating, I think I am leaning more towards the "replace engine with second hand one for now" option as I think it is the most cost effective. The only issue is Pete doesn't have a working engine at the moment, but 30405 has given me a fella's number who has an engine which he says is running perfectly off an 8 that was broken for parts which he had as a backup when bridgeporting his own engine.
I am tempted to go for this, but I do have very little experience swapping engines and can't really afford the car to be down for more than a weekend as I have to get to and from work during the week. I would love to be able to go and see Rob and use his ramp, but ultimately I don't want to waste people's time with my inexperience! Don't get me wrong, if I could get help to do the swap, I would be down there in a heartbeat!

Let me know what you all think and thanks so far for all the help!

i can do a swap in a day, but ive done it about 5 times now, a day to get it out and another back in is pushing it for a first timer.

the specialists say they can do it in a hour or so out and a couple of hours back in, but they have done it a few times before!

I wonder if that means the engine I got is a bridgeport....

I used the below as my guide and then in reverse for back in.
https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-tech-g ... cs-178937/

Everything you need is in the FAQ-tech section. Take some time to read it and come up with a plan. A multi tray container is great for keeping the bolts together and marked so you know what's going where. 90% of the skill of doing this is in the planning. Get the replacement coolant and oil ready for the big day. Along with bits like manifold to cat gaskets etc. Check out my thread. It isn't a comprehensive guide but will give you an idea to thought process etc.

I'd never done anything like this before so I can attest its achievable. If the timings line up i'll chuck my hat in the ring to help.

Many hands make light work.

Joe, i am more than happy to help, and have the facilities and proximity to do it. what you need is the time to do it. could you not arrange for a borrowed vehicle should things not go to plan. Just to be clear though, nuts and bolts is where i am at,however diagnosis, electrics etc would have me flumoxed.

If memory serves to get the engine out its

Under tray and wheel arch liners
6x bolts/nuts air pump
6x suspension brace
3x engine ground
3x bolts air intake
3x bolts battery box
6x bolts ECU (drill out)
3x drain bolts (1x oil 2x coolant)
2x oil line quick disconnects
2x fuel line quick disconnects
7x hoses disconnects
4x pully bolts (not 100% sure if required)
4x boots AC comp
12 X bolts/nuts engine frame and mounts
2x bolts starter motor
5x bell housing bolts

Then lift! Be strong.

This is the minimum for removing with crane. Most of the time is working out how best to access each part. The top bell housing bolts are a faff but with a wobble bar set it is doable.

I faffed and took the whole air intake apart while still in the car. It was hard and scratched this sh*t out of my hands 10/10 would not recommend.

Dammit.

3x exhaust bolts.

I removed the liners and undertray for ease of access.

Just to throw it out there and not wanting to put you off going the DIY route:

It's super nice of these guys to offer you help, engines, ramps etc (this car club is amazing) but if you're in doubt or don't know what you're doing it's worth giving bigpete a call. Just to ask.

Get an engine delivered to him and you might have this all sorted in a day.

Yeah, I get what you mean. Hopefully I've got time anyway to see how it gets on. I'll probably go for that engine John lead me on to and see where we go from there. Whether it be down to Rob's if possible or to Bigpete which probably would be easier if he agrees of course. For now, I'll have to take it easy and hope that it'll still get me to work and back!

It may also be worth investigating some breakdown cover with delivery to a destination of your choosing. That way should the worst happen in the mean time at least you can get the car to a location that can fix it.

daft i know, but make sure the engine is what you need ie 192 or 231.whilst you may know the difference, the seller may not, especially if buying unseen, get some images.

Update:

Waiting on a delivery quote off Matt for the replacement engine. Will hopefully hear from him soon. In the meantime, I called up Rotary Revs to see what they thought about the situation and they advised me to keep premixing, but don't redline (6-8k max) and bring it up to them for a compression test in a month or so. He wasn't convinced that no reading could be got from 2nd rotor and says that their tester will at least give a number. I'll probably do as he suggested for now and if it gets any worse, swap the engine out ASAP. (Will still likely buy the engine anyway regardless of results).
