Bigg Red caliper refurb

Post by GraemeC »

Had a problem with the OSF caliper so purchased a set of 2nd hand calipers (they were a mess) from eBay (£40) and sent them to Bigg Red for a refurb - I went for midnight blue and replacement of all bolts, seals, pistons etc. - £185

http://www.biggreddemo.auto-guru.uk/

Really pleased with the results and looking forward to getting them fitted :thumright:
its just a shame you dont see that much of the caliper with standard RX8 set up...

The only downside of having fancy looking brakes is that, come car cleaning time, you now have to wash them too

I have a wheel brush, from Halfords, that'll clean the entire hoop of the wheel & the brakes :D

I did this a few years ago,the thing that struck me with the stock calipers was how bloody heavy they were/are.

The things weigh a ton so a BBK upgrade really is worth it in terms of unsprung weight saving if you have the coin...

Never mind Mark ,that's the tool he uses when he's dusting about the house balls naked with nothing on but his ' rotary for life ' apron, its true Nigel showed me the pics    :giggle:

185 would be for one axle. With premium paint colour and the callipers in pretty bad shape.

I've used BiggRed twice now to refurb calipers on my RX-7's and I've been very pleased with the results both times. Highly recommended.

and "coin" is the killer, as most BBKs weigh a lot more than the oem callipers, especially when you also have to have additional mounting brackets, but even just the callipers for 4-pots can be really heavy, unless you spend more than the book value of the car.

I found that the Freakyparts calipers felt slightly lighter in the hand than the OEM calipers - but I didn't weigh them against eachother.

I've used bigg red in the past and wasn't impressed. Seals leaked so had to replace them with genuine seals.

The finish looked good to begin with but after about 2 years rust started coming though. This was on a car that gets kept in the garage and only comes out on warm dry days.

They did offer to redo the finish foc, but wouldn't foot the bill for another seal kit so declined their offer. This was about 10 years ago now so maybe they have improved!?

Just thought I'd revive this thread to let OC members know that we do still get the 10% discount from Bigg Red but their prices have gone up. They have not updated their website to reflect this yet, but their basic refurb has gone from £125 a pair to £155 a pair. I don't know about the price of the premium colours.

79398 has taken advantage of my offer to send my old calipers to Bigg Red and have them send the calipers on to him once done. He will send me his old ones.

I'll hold on to his old ones for six months. If nobody else wants me to do the same for them then I'll pop them on flea bay.

I telephoned them and agreed everything on the phone and then included a covering letter with my calipers and also sent an email.

I've been thinking of refurbing for a while now, and having found I actually have what seems a stuck rear caliper, I'm thinking sooner rather than later.
So is the concensus that this company is good?

My calipers have performed perfectly and still look great

However my car is a 2nd car, it is garaged, only really comes out when its dry and has probably done less than 1,500 miles since the calipers were fitted

Thing to remember when talking to bigred, is that unless you ask you won't find out there are three types of finnish available and priced accordingly. Found this out after complaining that the finnish didn't last on mates MR2 a few years back. Other than that they are a super helpful company

I found the guy very helpful.
He told the base price Includes essentially just a rattle can finish, which he told me doesn't last very long, but smartens them up, and so max price is enamal baked finish, which I will go with once I bite the bullet.
