R3 Windscreen

Post by Alexpb2401 »

The large chip in my screen has now turned into a crack...

Replacing under the insurance but they asked if it was tinted....?

It doesn’t look tinted to me but on the phone they said the standard spec is tinted. Anyone have an answer?

It's silly how hard some R3 specific parts are to get already. I tried to buy a coil bracket from Mazda last week. There aren't any left in Europe and they're checking whether there are any left to order from Japan.

Grab a nice A4 sheet of white paper.
Stick on inside of screen.
What colour is that A4 sheet looking from the outside.
There’s your tint colour.

My 8's got a dual-zone heated windscreen - you can bet that replacing that would be a nightmare :(

Is the series 1 rain sensing? If not then the R3 screen is likely different.

Are rain sensors built into windscreens? Surely those would be seperate from the windscreen for convinience sake?

You need to have a clear section behind where the rear view mirror mounts that does not block light so the infrared camera and light can pass through.

Ah interesting. But that sensor would then be a part of the rear view mirror and not the windscreen directly Id imagine? Like... Replacing a whole windscreen for one sensor doesn't seem like the most efficient way of doing things from a manufacturing point of view so to speak?

I think it sits just above. It is a separate unit but the windscreen needs to be compatible.

Gotcha. Still I can't imagine Autoglass not being able to supply a windscreen. Though would maybe have to go to a more specialist source for the 8 in general possibly? Since its such a low volume car its possible Autoglass wouldnt even bother holding stock for it.

Re: R3 Windscreen

Very long story short.

in 2004 we nearly bought a Ford Falcon XR6 ex-demonstrator, for less than half the list price.
There was a lot of good reasons why not and one was that Autoglass would have wanted over £600 to air-freight a screen from Australia, if we ever needed it, and that wouldn't have been included in our windscreen insurance, which only covered the cost of the screen and fitting.

I’m sure they will do it. A rain sensor is pretty low tech these days compared to what is on new car windscreens.

For sure. It just may not be compatible with an S1 windscreen.

To clear this up, the R3 screen is different to the S1. The S1 has a black panel up the top (or might be dotted, can't remember exactly) whereas the R3 has clear sections with little circular 'nubs' on it to focus the sensor for the rain and light sensors.

They are different, but when I had the screen replaced they (autoglass or similar) had no trouble sourcing a replacement.

Re: R3 Windscreen

The Mazda EPC shows eight different variations of screens for the S1, all based on part# FE28-63-900 with suffixes from B to H (some with a 9D tag).
The key seems to be the position of the VIN plate window, though I don't understand why this should change.
You need to input the car VIN to identify exactly which part # to order, with prices from £111.19 to £203.20

For the S2 (R3) there are only two variations; F191-63-900, with or w/o the 9D tag.
However, in this case the 9D tag version is shown as "Supersession parts" which means that it will fit a car originally equipped with the non-9D version. This is just as well as the older screen was £334.42 but the later one is only £107.40.

All prices dealer retail plus VAT.

Most large windscreen replacement companies, Autoglass etc, bypass the car manufacturer and source from 3rd-party suppliers, with much more variable quality compared to the OEM.

Years ago we had the screen changed on a Citroen and they had to do the job 3 times; the first had a bubble in the glass directly in my eye-line, the second had a wavy distortion right across the screen, which the fitter noticed when he was cleaning-up, the last one had the mirror mount bonded in the wrong place. In the end they found another mirror mount and bonded that is the right place, leaving the wrong one behind the mirror body.
It was only later that we realised that the replacement had a green tint whereas the original had a graduated tint, going from brown at the top down to lighter tan colour.

Not so sure about that - the R3 has a different "pattern" to the Mirror mounts because of the shroud around the Light and Rain sensors??

Ah - I see now identified in EPC :)
