Is the RX-9 going to happen?

Post by Delanor »

After the Vision Concept back in 2017 the motoring press is making noices that the RX-9 is going to happen with patented chassis parts a newly patented turbocharger on a stand alone rotary it will be showcased at the Tokyo motorshow (October 24th) apparently it will be looking at the Supra and Cayman as competition, but alas with a price tag of £50K+ I guess it will be out of reach for most RX-8 owners.

£50+k? Is this a repeat of the RX7 FD? Overpriced and underpowered?

Although I did read somewhere (don’t quote me) that it might push out 400-ish bhp.

Reports suggest 300-350 bhp.

That would be JDM BHP, so more like 260-320 in our money, as they define/measure differently

Our 231 = 250 JDM
Our 192 = 210 JDM

With the reported use of plastics/carbon fibre light weight body/chassis parts etc then those figures would be acceptable. :thumleft:

The Alpine 110 only has around 240hp and that flies.

With the announcement of a MK2 GT86/BRZ, I would rather see something to compete against that (and would have a better chance of owning one too).

Yes at £50K it starts to go up against alot of cars like the supra, the cayman, m cars etc. If it does I would like for it to properly give them some competition. Not just be fairly good, and appeal to the peeps who want a rotary, but actually really give them a proper battle. In the words of Yoda, do or do not, there is no try.

If it's a gt86/brz contender then it should of course be priced to reflect that and people can talk about how fun it is to drive, etc but know it's not in the class above.

The alpine is a great example of a left field car that not only is different but does give a serious battle to the likes of the Caymans/Supras/M cars. I do like that one....

I’ve also read that the Mk2 BRZ/GT86 has got around 250ish bhp. I might be wrong though.

Wrong :!: :!:

It's reported to be fitted with a 2.4lt Boxer Engine, but detuned to 217bhp :( as they don't want to take sales away from the Supra 2.0lt versions

My car produces more power than the New MKII version :P

So the Mk2 GT86 is going to be priced similarily to the 2L Supra's...? Or what... Aren't they at two different price points and there for not really competing with each other...?

Be interesting to see if the Mazda makes it to production looking like that I assume the Toyota will be similar to the existing model.

The vision IMO is one of the most beautiful shapes I think I've ever seen ( bar Marilyn Monroe) but an RX9? Never going to happen.

Yeah they might have it as a range extender but personally they can keep it, go big or go home...

Mazda uploaded a video on their Youtube channel, it was in Japanese but translated the title read "Rotary's 50th anniversary" and the description read "The rotary engine is not dead". It was about 12 mins of b roll with no sound. It was showing all of Mazda's rotary powered cars right up to the RX8 and then ended with the Vision. Since i saw it the video has been made private by Mazda. I wish i had downloaded the video...

This.

Answer is no, the green lobby are winning. In order to make it into production with acceptable emissions the car would have to be 99% CAT and 1% car.

Mazda have done a lot of R&D into the rotary engine and filed many associated patents, including direct injection and plasma ignition.

Both of these, plus a few others have significantly improved the specific power output, reliability and emissions.

However the main problem with the rotary is that it runs best near maximum power and anything below is always a compromise - this is something else that it has in common with gas turbines.

As it happens this is exactly the characteristics you want from an EV range extender, which is either running at full power to recharge the batteries, or not.

This has been the justification for Mazda's development program and will definitely be the next place we see rotaries deployed.

However there is still a strong rotary development community within Mazda that is hoping that the investment will make a breakthrough that provides an opportunity for a real direct rotary-powered vehicle, even if it is also a hybrid.

Imagine an F1 stye power train, only with a rotary.

The main problem is that current emission legislation is designed around the characteristics of a cat and totally against other solutions such as lean burn - cats actually need to run excess fuel to operate.

There is such a powerful political lobby and so much mangled data coming from those with a vested interest in the manufacture of cats, that it would take a lot of pressure to change.

We can chat til the cows come home but unless they can make it so it passes all the relevant regs it's never going to happen and even if it did pass said regs it will still need to be economical and reliable for people to even consider it and let's be honest the terms ' economical' and ' reliable' are pipe dreams
