Re: Alternative performance direct fit coils?
I seem to remember back in the day that coils had a resistor in series that was bypassed when starting the engine as the coil was spec'ed to run on the low starting voltage and would burn out running on the full 14v.

Re: Alternative performance direct fit coils?
That was common among cars in the 50-60's, having a "ballast resistor".

Re: Alternative performance direct fit coils?
What we really need is a set of coils that can deliver a (non-lethal*) high voltage to the area around the cat, when the car is parked.

Re: Alternative performance direct fit coils?
A lot of S2 had the B rev coils as well.Anyway, the 40th Anniversary S1's and all S2's benefited from a further enhancement to the OEM coil specification, and came fitted with ....C coils; aka the 4th generation.

Will knowing this do anything other than increase your knowledge? Surely all you need to know is that the revision C are are the later improved coils.

Re: Alternative performance direct fit coils?
IIRC the designation of ABC for coils doesn't necessarily mean differing quality It can be down to change of manufacturer etc

Re: Alternative performance direct fit coils?
Given that there were no published specifications for the original coils, there's no surprise that they didn't publish any data for the A, B or C revisions.

Re: Alternative performance direct fit coils?
I would't push rrp mk2/3-jdm as everyone is doing now. Same story was with ls2 (d585) and than problems started. Now RRP is the new hot item that most were at 30000km, and there are few that had problems and were public about it and hat their warranty refused.
Ps finally tok out my coils as new oemC should come Monday.
The damaged one is blown like a bad capacitor...

I can't recall any reports of RRP coil failures on here and certainly no evidence of warranty refusals.

Re: Alternative performance direct fit coils?
@bigpete8, world rx8 community is much larger than this forum
Also how often did you read about the ls2 coils failing in first 2 years after BHR introduced em?
The point is. Rrp are now the new hot item.. be careful as with any new hot item so you don't get burned
I will stop at this as I don't want to get a ban...

Re: Alternative performance direct fit coils?
I do know of Luke's run in with the warranty on them due to the car being tuned by RR, but other than that, no I don't know of any, which even then is a decent track record

Re: Alternative performance direct fit coils?
I will happily vouch for my set
I had one of the 1st sets of the Mk2 type and I'm now on 30K miles and still going strong
I realise Milos that you are not happy about some possible holes in the marketing numbers however the fact remains they are a more powerful coil that runs much more within its capability than the stock item and I for one would happily buy them again

Re: Alternative performance direct fit coils?
350matt you I chose to purchase em even after some holes in advertising numbers provided. I can show the refund they gave
Again i dont want to get my self banned so I aint going to say anything directly about em.
Was it tuned for d585 or simply tuned?

Re: Alternative performance direct fit coils?
Well if the RRP coils were run on a D585 dwell then that won't have done them much good as they are meant to work on the stock dwell figure

Re: Alternative performance direct fit coils?
This is why I ask if the tune was for the d585. Or simply tuned on eom coils.
As I wrote for ign1a dont likento be above 4ms., Ie they love to be on 3ms and under 40% (charge) duty stock dwell table is pushing this already. Even for oem coils to be clear.
I will write up a summary of all the findings on used coils on rotaries. But it takes a lot of time to write up a nice post buts its coming up

Re: Alternative performance direct fit coils?
I've had my RRP mk2 coils custom tuned... but by RRP
As warranty experiences was raised; I want to add that I had an issue with an RRP product (not a coil) that developed a wear related issue. RRP replaced it free with a brand new item and paid for the postage. That was despite the part being well out of warranty and them theorising that how the part was installed may have caused the issue (so it could well have been my own fault).
Pretty generous of them.

Re: Alternative performance direct fit coils?
I think I bought one of the first production RRP III coils. After a very brief periode, one coil failed (Carl thinks it was just a faulty item that was shipped). I got a new one, for free. For some time, I went back to my stock coils. 1500 miles ago, I switched back to the RRP coils (with one new coil), and last week the car started to show very irregular starting and running issues. Took them out, bench tested them and one was out of spec.
In the mean time, I installed my old oem coils and all is well again. Car starts fine (hot or cold) and runs smoother.
Carl is in the process of looking for a solution.
I didn't write this post to make bad publicity, but they do fail. Even if I get one for free every time they go wrong, I don't want to take them out every 1000 miles to test them.

Seams that they have sadly inherited the reliability of the ign1a as well.*thomas* wrote: ↑Sun Nov 14, 2021 8:29 amI think I bought one of the first production RRP III coils. Re: Alternative performance direct fit coils?
I have a set of mkii RRP coils, they have covered around 40,000 miles, I have had 1 coil fail which was replaced free of charge on production of proof that it has failed(I video'd the coil not firing both at the plug and at the coil with a cheap spark tester) this failed coil was in the trailing position and didn't cause any running issues I just noticed more pops on the over run)

Just measure resistance trough the 3 connector-pins. Carl has already offered to test them for me.
