Locking wheel nuts

Post by Secla »

Seem to have lost my socket 😞
Only way of used before is a reverse threaded cutting socket but obviously with the spinning collar on Mazda nuts that’s not going to work.

Anyone have any useful tips for getting them off ?

If it's a Mcgaurd one you can get a new one with a photo! Or some people beat a smaller socket on and undo but wrecks the lock!

Bang a 23mm socket on HARD, like so hard it grips the farther end past the sliding section. Then undo, remembering to wiggle the socket off whilst the nut is still attached as it is of course a bugger to remove once the nut is off.

Good last point, I am not a LWN fan so use my method before chucking them.

Not really worried about ruining them as the keys gone walk about. I was looking at my 12 sided socks and I seem to go from 20 straight to 26. Il go shopping for a deep 23 tomorrow

I have just had the same problem. My local garage charged me £20 to remove all 4 without damaging them using a tool which moulds to the shape of the lock and I still have the locking nuts if the key socket ever shows up so you might want to ask around

I lost my locking wheel nut key (god knows how) and my mechanic just used a socket designed for taking them off or possibly one of the ones for taking out rusted af nuts/bolts. Didn't cost me anything because I was using his ramp for servicing anyway. :p

Im really not a fan of locking wheel nuts... For one they look ugly... and for two they don't even do what they're meant to... Any theif that really wants your wheels isn't going to be stopped by it anyway. And anyone stealing OEM RX8 alloys if you dont have locking wheel nuts for scrap value is an idiot. More hassle than the alloys worth.

A neighbour wouldn`t use locking wheel nuts on his 4x4 Sierra the car went off the drive it was found on bricks minus its alloys, he claimed on his insurance and he got a new set but still didn`t use locking wheel nuts and some weeks later the car went a second time and it was found on bricks again minus its new set of alloys, he was refused insurance.

Ahah. When was that Del... Admittedly I live in the middle of nowhere... But how recent was that because surely unless they were stolen to order... Why bother?

Are 4x4 Sierra wheels rare ? Seems odd for someone to steel what seems like a fairly run of the mill wheel

I said the same the other day but then thought “is that because we all have locking wheel nuts now?”

It was a few years ago but they were highly sought after Ford RS 7 spoke alloys.
