Re: RX8 Brake Pads
I have mintex m1155 front and rear. After 8 track days they are now starting to get to the end of their life. Very strong braking with no fade.
I will buy again. I haven't tried them in cold weather yet

Re: RX8 Brake Pads
When I first had the Mintex pads made for the club I had 44,s 55,s and 66,s made
I tested various things and found 55,s front and 44,s rear made a great combination, this is also slightly cheaper and they can wear out at the same time rather than two fronts to one rear set wear rate.
Quest mead would also make the 1155,s for us at only slightly more than a set of 1144 front pads and they would last longer so a better deal but they want 25 sets ordered to make the batch.
So if someone wants to organise it I will take a set
When I used to race single seaters I used 44,s and 55,s when money was tight as I could buy them cheap locally for my calipers.
I used to enter the separate race class above my championship as well which gave me 4 races and 4 qualifying in a weekend.
Sometimes I would struggle to get the 44,s to the end of the weekend depending on circuit but the 55,s would do it easy.
I would also use 55,s fron and 44,s rear at times.
For people who don’t know :
The 1144 pad is a road pad but can take some reasonable track use ( very user friendly )
The 1155 is a track pad but not a full blown expensive ultimate race pad ( can easily be used on the road ) ( very user friendly )
Hope that’s useful
Pete

Re: RX8 Brake Pads
Another consideration is disc rotor wear.
More aggressive pads usually mean a (much) short disc life.
For example, when I upgraded the pads on my VFR750 to Dunlopad Ceramic the high-speed braking was noticeably better, but the front discs were below the wear limit in less than 2k miles
Some pads produce a lot of dust, which some people can't live with.

No worries in all honesty I missed out on it too didn't find out until after so whenever I see a post about said products I try and drop it in there as most people go by the opinion that EBC is more expensive than other brands such as MintexDevon_Fourie wrote:Awesome thank you, I was still new to members section so still working my way around that area.

Hi Pete,Conan wrote: ↑Mon Sep 16, 2019 8:30 pmHi and as you have found there are lots of opinions on brake pads.
The OEM pads were actually very, very good, ( The Formula woman race series used them ) all the cheap pads available are not as good as OEM. ( I was surprised by them )
The truth is simple : ( one size does not fit all ) horses for courses
For you and your requirements I would recommend the Mintex 1144,s I had these made for the club the first time around as they were not available in our calliper size. Cheaper than yellow stuff and a better feel although there is not a big difference as both compounds have to comply with E - 90 regulations on cold stopping compliance. ( euro regs )
You should be able to pick a car set up for around £130 to £150
Regards
Pete
Would you be able to recommend a good supplier for these mintex 1144 pads?

You can buy from Questmead if you contact their sales department. Pretty sure I mentioned that already.

Re: RX8 Brake Pads
Hm. They didn't mention that at all when I contacted them about pads. Seemed willing enough to sell to me but obviously at a higher price per unit than the group buy/race teams would get them for. Didn't mention a minimum amount of any description.

Yeah that's what I was thinking too. But I only really wanted a unit price at the time. Came out almost a hundred or so more in total than the group buy though.

Old thread hi-jack... Has anyone had to file down their Mintex 1144 pads?
I found the rears really tight, requiring some light hammer tapping to get in to the calliper, along with a liberal amount of Ceratec
Given so many of the club use 1144s, I didn’t think I’d need to file the backing plates down (so I didn’t!). But I’m a little worried now that the pads won’t slide freely.
Also a bit surprised to find the 1144s didn’t come with new calliper sliders. I had to fish my old ones off the floor and give them a good clean .

Re: RX8 Brake Pads
You shouldn't have to file them down. Maybe there are manufacturing tolerances that can result in some coming out too large. Maybe they sent you the wrong pads. Maybe your piston isn't fully retracted?
A light tap with a hammer to get them in is OK. Kind of depends on how much force we're talking
I've moved on from 44s but the few sets I had fitted fine.
Yeah these ones never come with sliders. If the old ones are ever past cleaning up you can still get new ones.

Re: RX8 Brake Pads
My assumption is its the wings/guides. Sometimes the caliper bracket rusts a little squeezing them in to tight.
I got the Dremel out on mine and tidy'd the bracket up but still had to file the guides on the pads.

Re: RX8 Brake Pads
Thanks for the info. The pistons are full wound back - in fact, the pistons were well out of the way detached from the rest of the calliper as swapped in new Mintex discs at the same time.New Duke wrote: ↑Sun Sep 05, 2021 9:37 pmYou shouldn't have to file them down. The issue was more getting the pads to slot into the sliders straight all the way flush to the disc. The fronts slipped in by hand, but the rears needed some hammer tapping - not particularly hard, but more than I was expecting.
Everything is assembled now, with the piston over the pads.

Good to know, thanks. Yes, the pistons is full wound back. It was tight betting the pads into the sliders, though.

Re: RX8 Brake Pads
I gave the grooves in the callipers a good wire brushing + plenty of brake cleaner. I didn’t break out my Dremel, though. I’ll guess I’ll have to see if the rears are binding and, if so, pull them out and file the pad wings down a bit.Vj4sothername wrote: ↑Sun Sep 05, 2021 9:50 pmMy assumption is its the wings/guides.
