Changing brake fluid

Post by Delanor »

As my car was in for its MOT today (passed OK) while they had it at a local garage I asked for a quote to change the brake fluid - if no problems - £80 is that for real?

Does that include the clutch line? As many don't

Halfwits/Halfrauds do it cheaper, but they only suck the stuff out the top and refill with new, not touching any in the lines at all [-X

£15 for the fluid, with markup, so call it £25. And half an hour of labour at £50 per hour, so £25. So in total I'd say £50 would be fair, but £80 isn't silly. It's an easy job, and saves you £65. Win :thumleft:

That was just the brakes but I had fluid done on a Ford at a Ford dealer they charged me £40 so £80 at an independent seemed a trifle expensive I just thought while they are doing the MOT they could do the fluid but not at £80.

Need to get my trusty brake bleeder on it now, if she isn`t planning a shopping trip!

Some years back a local Ford dealer was doing exactly that, charging for replacing the fluid but they were just changing the fluid in the reservoir ie. not bleeding the system, trading standards set up a sting and caught them out - I bet that is a common practice, how many people get down and check if the bleed valves have been opened.

To be honest I have had the smaller brake cylinder bleed valves on rear drums shear off but never a front caliper, they are usually only seized if they have not been opened for several years.

Although I changed the fluid on my 911 2 years ago and have just done it again, a couple of bleed valves out of the 4 calipers were well tight. :paranoid:
