2 Shades of Grey and Good Compression

Post by Jonny52002 »

Hi All,

A while since my last post.

I've finally managed to get a compression test on my Rex last week and all is good !!! (Not bad for £450)

Is there anything I can do to maintain this or things to avoid doing that reduces the compression ?

Also, since I've had it the front bumper has always bugged me as it isn't the correct colour. My car is Titanium Grey but what colour is this bumper ?

Avoid short journey and pootling around at low revs
The rotary needs to be red lined (or close) regularly to prevent carbon build up

The front bumper could be Galaxy grey, but it's difficult to tell.
Galaxy Grey PZ number 24.
Large street port. Lots of flames, lots of smiles.

You could get a tit grey bumper from a breaker on here for not a lot of money and pop it on, job done :D

Try bigpete on here, really nice guy who'll look after you ;)

Regarding the car, start premixing and as stated give her Holly on a regular basis to keep her sweet, btw what were the comp figures?

I have same problem with colours. I believe that colours have faded on bonnet (aluminium) more than the plastic front end.
The 15 years of being on car takes its toll. Personally I keep thinking of respray or wrapping. :thumright:

Was going to look into premixing once I'd got through this first phase of getting it onto road, is it straight forward enough to do as I watched one video on youtube about it and it completely lost me. Yes the plan is to pick one up an replace it from a breakers or someone on here. Its currently having sills done and getting through MOT so its a bit down the list at the minute of jobs to do.

Didn't get figures just know it was in the good range.

Tbh for £450 having any compression is a good start! :)

If the car starts hot then I'd presume you're good for several thousand miles of fun barring major catastrophe. Beep it once it's hot and chuck a bottle of cataclean in once in a while and really thrash it to clean out the carbon and you'll get more than £450 worth of enjoyment out of it I imagine.

Happy for one of the more experienced rotorheads to tell me I'm doing something wrong but this is how I look after mine (which is also cheaper than it had any right to be and compressioned about 6.1's after I bought it)

I've premixed religiously from day 1 of getting mine, but I don't think the previous owners ever did (or cared) and I'm just about to cross 80k. To make things easy for myself at the pump, I bought a couple of squat 300ml HDPE bottles with screw lids (for ~£3) that fit snugly in the rear cupholders and get filled just over halfway (really precise measurements) with Castrol Power 1 2T. I run the car down to at least a quarter tank, then chuck one in before I start filling so it gets "scientifically" mixed in with the (cheap, sorry premium lovers) unleaded I put in.

Speaking broadly, the only real downside to premixing (with the right 2 stroke oil obviously, of which there's a long list of options) can be a smell as it's burnt off, but I don't really notice it tbh. Even if I did, it'd just smell like lawnmower/strimmer fumes, which I enjoy so...

Think I'll get into the premixing, in the long run I was going to look at the sohn adaptor.

The sohn adapter just feeds clean oil to the omp, rather than using oil from the sump.

It doesn't have any impact on pre-mixing

Ah I see, that was getting me confused a little, not that it takes much.

Just to add to the confusion, the most common oil to use in the sohn supply tank is 2-stroke (2T) , the same as most people use for pre-mixing.

The reasoning being the same, 2T is specifically designed to be burnt within the combustion chamber, after it's done its job, either by premixing in the fuel or direct injection.
