I'd fit this. It's cheaper, more powerful (a full 216W), and fits all MX-5s, apparently (so I assume can be modified to fit an RX-8).

Not with Ranjans fashion tastes, anyway the staff will clean up the "marble" counter and do the laundry so don't pity Ranjan too much!!

Now where is my frizzle stick volty amp clip on doofer thing as I need to do some calibrationism of the gizmotron ionizer.

I cannot bear to listen to that guy, he is has a most annoying tone. The other YouTuber I cannot stand is the muppet that goes round the car shows producing crappy videos. Hmm! Maybe this should be in the Vent Your Spleen thread.
With electric motor technology these days then the electric supercharger will I am sure become a more common fitment to increase power and improve emissions.

Yeah, as stupid as the idea sounds, modern technology has turned something we would roll our eyes at and laugh into something that could turn out to be curiously effective!

Not that I'd ever tack one of these onto the front of my RX8.
That said they are becoming very tunable, and depending on the ease of fitment it would be interesting to find what kind of pressure an average MSP can run before it starts damaging the engine's longevity.

This also raises a couple of interesting questions...

Could you operate like NOS and only use "on demand", taking power from a dedicated battery that isn't expected to be re-charged as you drive, for a huge power boost, without the s/c getting in the way of the intake airflow at other times?

or

If the electric supercharger was driven by a dedicated battery that was charged via a home or roadside charging point, could you claim that the car was legally a "hybrid", for all the tax and access benefits that comes with the label?

On a similar line to Dave would it not be possible to use an electric hub to give a hybrid... In my simplistic world somehow manage to fit these on the front hub, stick Some batteries in the boot to even the weight and either use a proper throttle interface to assist engine or my favourite just stick it on at WOT....

That gets very complicated very quickly. Imagine if you just blew pressurised air into the intake. Some would go in the engine, but most would be blown upstream, through the air filter. Clutched superchargers usually have valves and a bypass circuit to reroute the air around the supercharger when the supercharger is off. You would have to do the same with an electric supercharger. You can't just turn the power off and let it freewheel because the electric motor would generate a huge reverse current, preventing the supercharger turning, and blocking the air flow. Suddenly, your electric supercharger is looking rather complicated, with clutches, valves, bypass ports, and so on. Not to mention all the control hardware and software you'd need to keep it functioning, and the engine safe.

I never said it would be simple.

JCB used a combination of an electric supercharger and a turbo on Guy Martin's "Worlds Fastest Tractor", with the two operating in parallel.

It was diesel too so that introduces a whole new bunch of parameters I think compared to a petrol engine and also not a rotary.

Re: Electric SUPERCHARGER

not as bad as you might think
on similar applications I've seen there's no need for bypass valves etc ( with the right sized compressor) the motor drive is smart enough to see that the impeller is being turned and can be configured to 'freewheel' so there's no pumping loss over the compressor for running in NA mode

the torque amp also comes with a 48V battery that works like Dave has already surmised so its only used like a shot of NOS and isn't intended for running full time

the drawback of its current unit is it tops out at 160 g / sec mass airflow and the rexi uses 220g/sec at full pelt
so it will only give a low-end torque gain and need a bypass to avoid restriction at the top end of the revs

potentially you can use 2 maybe ?

That's precisely it Matt and why they are only used by Audi etc: to provide the low end torque and eliminate lag also.

Re: Electric SUPERCHARGER

at the moment yes,
so currently they are more suited to a small engine such as one you might use for a range extender so you have a 600cc single rotor with a electric supercharger that can feed off the 48V battery to give the same power we have now but with much improved fuel consumption

who knows possible rx9 drivetrain..?

They are still running their Kickstarter so I'd imagine they will come out with various sized units at some point.
The idea of running two does sound ideal to get a smoother response. Those batteries are big though and at 2-3 grand a pop it's starting to look similar to normal turbos cost wise.
Watching videos of single monster turbos just make it look so ridiculous, waiting ages for all hell to break loose for two or three seconds while your driven wheels spin like a blender and your prop snaps! It just looks so impractical. I guess that is why the last REW had a pair.
