Replacement air filter pipercross
Looking to get a new air filter as mine has picked up crap already. Has anyone got experience with washable filters such as the pipercross?
Coming in at £35 it will be better in the long run
Any ideas?

Re: Replacement air filter pipercross
They're fine for the 8 but don't expect any difference in performance.
It's a bit like choosing to use washable terry towel nappies rather the disposable Huggies, they still collect the same sh!t, just more messing about when you change.
I fitted a K&N panel filter many years ago, because it was available cheap, and it's not caused any issues as I've very careful when I wash and re-oil.
Would I buy one now? No, I'd be happy with a decent brand paper filter.

Re: Replacement air filter pipercross
Yeah I wasn't really looking for performance just for ease of use.
A new filter is around £15 and this is my second replacement in 3000 miles (mostly traveling to track days etc) so for £35 I can get one I can clean and re oil.

Re: Replacement air filter pipercross
I had K&N filters on my MG and found it more hassle than they were worth.
By the time you have products to clean and oil and spent the time doing it I would say it works out cheaper to just use disposable paper filter.

Re: Replacement air filter pipercross
Be careful with foam based filters - Dan had one years ago that I think was a Pipercross which degraded and was partially gobbled up by the engine. I suspect they don't like being exposed to engine oil
I'm a standard filter fan myself too, it just works.

I use Cosworth synthetic panel filters in both our RX8's
1) It has a cool name
2) No oil to muck about with

Re: Replacement air filter pipercross
Be aware that "branded" air filters are near the top of the list for faked products.

Re: Replacement air filter pipercross
I've been using the same K&N panel filter for the last 5 years, it's been grand. It's still stained from the oil burp I had at Brands last year, but I cleaned it and it hasn't measurably impacted performance. I'm happy, but so are those who use standard paper panel filters. Each to their own
To Do List: HKS CAMP2 install; cruise control; new exhaust; detail paintwork, possible respray
Done: Hayward Rotary rebuild and stage 2 port; Racing Beat ARBs, adjustable front droplinks, ram air intake and lightened flywheel; Exedy stage 1 clutch; Eibach Pro-Kit lowering springs; Koyo radiator; heated front screen; EBC redstuff pads all round

Re: Replacement air filter pipercross
Over the years there has been several back to back tests of panel air filters and in some cases the OE filters flowed more air than the K&N, Pipecross, Cosworth, Green filters etc I also once had a Pipercross in an RS Turbo that the foam started to degrade so I stopped using them, although using foam ITG filters have always performed well for a small power increase.

Re: Replacement air filter pipercross
I also remember seeing a post about a piper cross filter breaking up and getting sucked into the engine and covering the maf. I’ve always used k&n panel filter or the aem intakes
All of the rotors, none of the compression

Re: Replacement air filter pipercross
We had Yamaha 1000 EXUP in the Motorcycle Workshop with very rough running.
It had an aftermarket foam panel filter with an alloy mesh, very much like the Pipercross jobs, which had started to crumble and had been eaten by the carbs.
Seems that the own had "serviced" the filter the month before and used an aerosol filter spray to make it sticky, as recommended by his mates that did motocross. The spray had destroyed the foam.

Re: Replacement air filter pipercross
All very good food for thought! There is the risk of the foam breaking up, I'm sure they have a pretty good warranty on the pipercross ones. I have a foam filter on the Pulsar GTIR and don't have any issues with it. Super handy to be able to wash it out but that's a bit of a different car.
Maybe I'm mixing practicality with the want to "upgrade" things. There is nothing wrong with the stock filters but just have an obsession with wanting something better/more multi use

I think it depends on the car, as I have had no issues in the last 5 years and also don't forget my car is Serviced every 6 months at 10k
