Painting exhaust bumper shrouds

Post by Roosterrory »

Hi guys,

Been thinking of painting the 2 plastic exhaust shrouds to colour match the rest of the Rex now I've fitted the aero kit. Has anyone else done this? Just trying to imagine whether it would look as good as I think it would!

Mines titanium grey, but if anyone has pics of any colour would be grand just to see whether it's too much colour or not
231 in titanium grey, special edition 10 spoke rex wheels, full lockwood grills front and back, new coils leads and plugs, toyo sports decat & de-baffled OEM backbox, full tanned and black leather interior, bright orange callipers, re-sprayed wheels, white led sidelights...........

To do: catch can, new intake & save for a rebuilt ported donk........

The plastic that the shrouds are made of does take paint very well, you'll need a special primer to get it to stick.
Most paints will also degrade rapidly when subjected to the radiant heat from the exhaust tips.

It can be done and it might last a while, but don't be surprised if it flakes off and/or turns bronze.

Yea, I'd been thinking about the heat damage possible from the exhaust gases. Been thinking of fitting a chrome / polished heat shield on the inside and having them sprayed the same colour as the rest of the car.

Just can't decide if it's a good idea or not yet!

My entire rear custom rear end was colour matched to the car and in 11 years (about) never discoloured/flaked but it was prepared with the correct plastic undercoat.
Now a distant memory unfortunately.

I quite like the black parts of my bumper etc... But it would've been nicer for sure if it wasn't just the plastic being black and was actual gloss paint of some description...

The trick is not only to use the correct primer but also to ensure that any residue of "black bumper treatment" is removed first.
Sometimes it's necessary to sand back the original material as the surface may have become porous and taken up silicones etc from various treatments.
The paint itself also needs to be able to cope with the material flexing, a lot more than metal does.

A professional paintshop should have the skills and materials required, just don't expect long lasting results from a standard rattle can.

I mean if the black plastic parts were gloss black paint imagine how much better that would look on a VR car... But then they'd have to have options "match the rest of the car? want it black?" probably why they just cheaped out.

Cheaping out crossed my mind, but best way in my mind to keep it looking tip top for long term was to have it sprayed like the car

Yeah I quite like the results other people have had with it... But I'd probably go black gloss... because I like the red/black contrast on my car... Plus it'll match when I maybe respray it midnight purple. ;)

Pauline's bike (GPz500) is black with a purple metallic flake - looks great in the sun.

Just don't let Mike (mi60o0) hear you use the "P" word :D

if youre going to paint the plastic parts, you will need to use a adhesion promoter to make it stick properly.

Does anyone know if you can get the shrouds off without having to drop the bumper?

Also any ideas what the temperature gets up to around the exhaust?

Many thanks.

hi mate, yes it is possible to take them off independently,as i did mine last night. safe access to underside is key ,either stands or ramps, but it can be done on the ground as i did.
first up,remove 2 pop studs on the lowest part of the shroud, then reach around back of bumper and you will find 6 wedge type lugs.if you work around the lugs in a clock fashion, whilst keeping backwards pressure in an upwards direction ,using a plastic trim remover,it will come out easily, some help would be useful ,but i managed on my own with a bit of faffing about.
