Am I looking at an Engine Rebuild?
So today I collected the RX8 from my local Mazda Dealership for the Airbag recall and all is well. I get in and start her up (Slow but it started)
Drove 20 Miles back home, Motorway all the way, it dies just off the Motorway and doesn't start from that. Regardless of what I try.
I've tried, with no success:
- De-Flooding the engine
- Starting with no Throttle
- Starting with tiny amounts of Throttle
- Letting cool down and starting
The engine turns over and you can hear compression when trying to start it. Fuel smell from the exhaust.
Any advice or experience with this issue? Am I looking at an engine rebuild?
Tia.

Re: Am I looking at an Engine Rebuild?

Re: Am I looking at an Engine Rebuild?
Nope, just the Airbag recall. Supposedly the car didn't need or had other recalls done prior to my ownership

Haha, anywhere would deny it though, as I have no proof they tinkered with anything else

Re: Am I looking at an Engine Rebuild?
i cant think what they could do with a airbag recall that would cause any issues other than the obvious (airbag light) but never say never....

Yeah that's what I thought, but as you say. It could be anything

Re: Am I looking at an Engine Rebuild?
Symptoms sound more like a blocked cat. I wonder if they smashed it when driving it on and off the ramps (or when thrashing it to "make sure the erm air bag work was OK".....)

Okay, how do you clean your Cat? I'd that's even possible

Re: Am I looking at an Engine Rebuild?
I'm also had an ECL on, with a fault of of P0420. If that could be causing the issue

Re: Am I looking at an Engine Rebuild?
thats leaning weight to the cat theory, certainly.
however ive never seen a blocked cat (on its own) cause a non start issue. refuse to rev and general badness, yes, but theyll usually idle, if only for a short while.
what (we all on here) i have seen, is a borked ignition system cause a blocked cat, which causes high back pressure, which causes seals to break, which causes dead engine syndrome.
so, id have a compression test done, if i where you, TBH.

Re: Am I looking at an Engine Rebuild?
Okay I'll have to see who is near me that can perform a compression test for me

Re: Am I looking at an Engine Rebuild?
Was it just the passenger airbag or the drivers airbag too?
While it does look like the cat, I'm wondering if they did the drivers airbag and disturbed the wiring for the immobiliser

Re: Am I looking at an Engine Rebuild?
Do you know if it's the original cat?
Big, oval cross-section bodied, with external heatshield.
If it's a generic aftermarket replacement then they can collapse and effectively block the catback.
This not only stops the engine starting but would also create artificially low readings if the engine is compression tested.

Re: Am I looking at an Engine Rebuild?
The previous owner fitted an aftermarket exhaust to it (I've not been under the car yet)
The pictures below are of what I can see, exhaust wise.

Re: Am I looking at an Engine Rebuild?
I'd say drop that cat pipe down for a peek or whip the O2 sensor out and use a mini USB camera to look inside

Re: Am I looking at an Engine Rebuild?
Could it not be as simple as they disconnected the battery and ecu needs to relearn trims from cold?

Possibly, I'll give it a go today as it's been left over night and see what it does

:UPDATE:
This morning I have tried to turn the car over and there is no change from yesterday. It's had over 12 Hours to cool down but still nothing

I've got no one to tow me today, but would a bump start help?

Re: Am I looking at an Engine Rebuild?
no.
tow start turns the engine over faster than the starter for a long period of time. a bump wont do that.
but as it cut out whilst running i wouldn't bet on it being flooded.
