Should I be worried?

Post by kopite72 »

Hi guys,

I've noticed lately that the car is taking an extra crank or two to start from cold which is a bit baffling as the battety is only 4 months old ( varta E23) and the starter motor is spinning at circa 290 so I'm at a bit of a loss really.

I've tested both myself and they are both fine. Another thing I've noticed is that she's hesitating a little bit as I accelerate particularly in 2nd gear. I've absolutely zero codes on the reader showing, no flashing CEL to denote a misfire so again I'm a tad stumped and a tad worried if I'm being honest.

Just spit balling here but could it be the fuel pump that's causing the hesitation issues? I'm running the 585 coils and I've checked the leads to see if everything is seated properly which it is so I don't really know what to think....

Any help would be appreciated, thanks gents

If it were the coils surely it would throw a code but it's showing nothing, nada.

Maybe I'm being overly paranoid but it's always fired instantly from both cold and hot starts and the extra few cranks doesn't fill me with delight...

You're probably right Nige!! I've had a few issues lately with her that wouldn't exactly help me when I'm trying to sell it to a potential buyer

A single coil failure often won't trigger a CEL, especially if it's a trailing coil.

This is the problem because so much damage can be caused by incomplete combustion before anyone notices. Less of a risk with a decat.

I've emailed Ben about the possibility of replacing the coil pack under warranty, hopefully something will come of that.

On the issue of the car taking an extra few cranks to start, would a failed or failing cool cause that?

Certainly can be - had that with a few cars - OEM coils and D585s.
Some with EML, some without.

Revs have been messed about quite a bit with people sending coils back when there's been nothing wrong with them (problem has later been found elsewhere, like low compression etc).
So it would seem like they've gotten somewhat less 'easy going' compared to what people might have be used to in the past with them going over-and-above what they should be expected to do.

I think I recall them saying there's a surcharge for returns in case they're not faulty and have to be returned - which is fair enough as it's wasting their time. If there's a fault then I assume the fee is returned with the replacements.

So it might be worth seeing if there are strong sparks from all 4 coils with the testers Ed linked before taking it all off and boxing them up.

Ian just been looking at one of a bout 200 text from Carl Hayward for testing coils as I had a problem a while back so in his words , easy way to check coils is drive in 6th gear at 25mph and gently press throttle to ease through rpm to 40 mph and see if its smooth.

Yeah did that, I'm convinced it's the coils or coil that has failed. Car is hesitating, it's down on power ect ect, it all points to the coils.

Looking to get them replaced under warranty but we'll see how that pans out...

Let's hope Ian's Zimmer frame will fit in the boot...he'll be old enough to need one by the time he gets the MX-5

Actually he should just wait for the 75th Anniversary
