Hi all,
I'm in the process of doing a deal on a 2007 PZ and the seller has mentioned he's removed the auxillary startup fan as it's only purpose is to keep emissions down on startup. I'll admit that this is something I've never heard of...can anyone shed any light on this?
Thanks in advance!

He will mean the air pump. It’s a common thing to remove if it decatted, as it becomes obsolete then. Also makes room for the fitting of a catch can or other goodies

Re: Removal of auxillary startup fan??
You could still remove it even if you have a cat installed - all it does is pump more air into the exhaust for a couple of minutes after startup, to allow some of the unburnt fuel to burn in the cat matrix and heat it up quicker. Good old Euro 4 regulations, they specified that the emissions must be below a set level after a set number of minutes, but since the cat doesn't operate at full efficiency until it's hot, it needs a helping hand.
This isn't part of the MOT test, and only applies to new cars when they're being approved for sale. Removing the pump will increase the warm up time of the cat slightly, but once it's up to temp it does the same job anyway. The only thing to make sure of is that the CEL code has been mapped out so you don't get a warning light on the dash - that's a fail.

Re: Removal of air pump??
Known officially as the Secondary Air Injection pump, I removed mine years ago and still run the original cat with no issues. Good luck with the purchase

My SAI is noisy and I have a decat anyway, I am not too bothered about actually removing it so am I ok just to unplug it?

Unplugging it will most likely throw a CEL Other than that you're good to go.

Re: Removal of air pump??
There are two CEL codes that will come up related to a removed SAS pump.
One is the hardware test of the components, which you could spoof with the right resistor in the connector.
However the other is an expected reaction from the O2 sensor which is impossible to spoof.
Much easier to get them both disabled by a PCM mini-map.
Note that they only appear during a cold start that would be cold enough for the system to engage - which explains why some people say "I removed my air pump and didn't get any codes" to which the answer is "Yet...".

and if youre going to get a mini-map, you may as well go the whole hog rrp (see my sig) do a remote mapping service for both mini and full mapping. a very easy process and well worth it
