Re: NEW Rotary Engine? Mazda just Updated their Rotary Engine Patents!
Mazda never stopped developing the rotary engine and modern hybrids provide the ideal niche.
One of the biggest problems with all rotaries is creating a smooth power output across a wide range of rpms and load conditions, with reasonable emissions.
As a "range extender" the rotary can be designed to operate at a fixed rpm and load, as it runs to recharge batteries; it's either running at its maximum efficiency or not at all.
This is also where the other advantages of high power/weight/size and low vibration have a chance to shine.
Sadly, I don't believe there's ever going to be an RX-9 with a purely rotary powertrain or even any direct-drive rotary powered car within the foreseeable future.

I would imagine a ‘smooth’ Rotary is the ideal power plant for a generator on board actually.
The news has been around a while so we’ll have to wait and see if Mazda brings out something competitive. Looks like they’ll be late to market mind you.

Patent appears to be for the engine to have a side port exhaust and a small overlapping peripheral exhaust port.....and new turbo design.

They will have deliberately held back some "new innovations" that they can drip-feed into the patent process to keep the patents from expiring.

Re: NEW Rotary Engine? Mazda just Updated their Rotary Engine Patents!
Nice! Always good to see Mazda making progress. There is quite a bit of conflicting information regarding a new car, but there have been quite a few encouraging tidbits of evidence, like the RX8 mule testing at The Nurburgring and the beautiful concepts.
Personally I'd be surprised if they don't release one more rotary driven car before the combustion engine goes the way of the horse drawn carriage. The question is, are there enough "enthusiasts" with the money to make, what would undoubtedly be an expensive vehicle, viable?
