Acoustic “Camera”

Post by delta0 »

I’m sure many of you picked up in this in the news today that there is talk of a new acoustic camera system going to be trialled in the UK. No information on dB limits or distance they will be tested at but it would be good to get an understanding of what the dB of many of the popular exhaust systems are so that we know which may fall foul.

My system is a Pettit/Milltek with high flow cat. I also have the revi air intake system. Has anyone had this setup measured on a drive by at a track? If so what was the dB and distance?

Do we know what the dB limit and anything else such as distance of measurement for these new “cameras”?

Thanks. We can focus this thread on specific exhaust and intake setup dB values.

Indicative values. Expect some margin. As every db check I've had done on track has given different readings. There's over 10db between the highest and lowest readings.

Only a precious few will have your fancy exhaust setup delta. Am curious to see if anyone with it will post. And yes I'm jealous

No drive by data.

Only info I currently have since REVi intake and RAM Air being fitted was the static test a Combe on 1st June. 86dB at 4.5k.

However was black flagged at Brands a couple of years back as (with standard intake) the drive by noise limit was being triggered now and again on the start finish straight.

Mine is loud... I'll just say that.

I'm doing work to reduce volumes.

Driving about on a normal road and normal road speeds then mine is within tolerance. On track I set off a 100db meter at Castle Combe, on drive by with the sound guy about 10-15 metres from track side...

Not fantastically made, and when coupled with their dual res decat and an RB mani, no overly quiet either... :D

At least we have slightly more clarity on the dB limit. 90 dB for a forward facing camera. I think a straight pipe would be needed to trigger that.

When 2 vehicles are caught in the same speed trap they use the 'ladder' on the road to confirm which vehicle tripped the speed camera.
I don't see how you can acoustically isolate a single motorcycle in a group of bikes?

Re: Acoustic “Camera”

Speed cameras use radar to trigger but the radar isn't certified to measure speed for prosecution.

The cameras take two photos, with a calibrated delay, and the position of the car across the grid between the two shots is the evidence of speed. It's surprising how many people pay the speeding ticket without ever being shown the two photographs that are required. It's also surprising how many times that people ask to see the photos and the speeding fine is dropped in favour of "a warning".

"Average speed cameras" also use two images, on consecutive cameras and a central system calculates the time/distance=speed.

We have lots of average speed cameras in NI, and there's many an idiot that brakes for each one, then accelerates between, somehow thinking that beats the system, either that or they keep changing lanes, as if that would work #-o

Anyway, if the acoustic camera ever comes off then a front-facing camera isn't going to catch any bikes; with only rear numberplates

Oh they'll find a way to get bikers (and drivers) to feed the council coffers. All this will be working (and legal in no time). Whether it's by attaching a second camera that captures the rear numberplate once the vehicle has passed, or another method. No way they'll let that juicy money supply from motorists slip by. Will just take them a while to perfect their methods that's all. Lots of companies and councils have too much at stake.
