r3 air con compressor

Post by AndyBrad »

So no reply from RR regarding getting a new compressor fitted.

How hard can it be. Are they all the same?

I believe it's the same part between the S1 and R3, although taking age and reliability in to account I'd probably weigh up the cost of a new one.

With regards to fitting, technically you are not allowed to if it has gas in it as venting to the atmosphere is not allowed (please confirm if I'm wrong on that factor). Likewise once fitted you will likely need someone professional to fill the system with gas as the FIY kits you get often require a small amount of pressure to still be in the system, which yours obviously wouldn't have.

Happy for people who have actually done it to chime in, though, as I haven't - I'm just going on knowledge and discussions with people about AC systems in general.

As Dan said you'll need to get a mobile air con guy to come and flush and refill the system for you. Should be cheap though. Have him check for leaks after it's done.

May as well have a go at fitting the compressor yourself, although any mechanic should be able to do it. Let us know how you get on.

Might be worth asking bigpete if he has one. Otherwise used ones are around £40+ on eBay. If you get a new one please let us know what one you get and where from.

All Series 1 (since 2003) and R3
- compressor assembly complete F151-61-450A @ £544 retail

Compressor unit #F151-61-K00 up to VIN ...030802 @ £842.54
Compressor unit #F151-61-450A from VIN... 030303 @ £544 retail

This pricing doesn't seem to make sense, until you understand how manufacturers re-price stock parts.

Basically, if you have an earlier car and just want to replace the compressor, while keeping your old magnetic clutch & pulley, then it would cost you 300 quid more than replacing the entire assembly with the later version. It would make no sense to do this.

What it does mean is that you can replace the entire assembly (used) between any RX8 (S1 or R3) but you can't mix-n-match the early clutch/pulley and the later compressor unit.

I don't understand what you mean by "difference between the 7920 and 7921 compressors" unless that's the suppliers part references

My ac system was emptied out and I filled it quite happily from a day kit (diy kit is generally more expensive than going to a specialist but as I work 7 days it's the convienece I liked)

A diy kit should (may) work, as could a quick re-gas from a tyre place or whathaveyou.

The problem is, without a vacuum purge and re-fill, there's no way to manage the proportions of oil, gas and leak-detection dye in the system, or remove any previous contaminants.

This will (almost certainly) reduce the efficiency and lifespan of the system, resulting in premature compressor and/or seal failure in the future.

Dave recently made a very pertinent post, pointing out that all mods, Spin Doctors, Admin and Committee members are volunteers, and do this job for nothing.

Dave's given you some great info, for free. You could look up all the information you need, if you just renewed your membership.

(Yes, I'm having one of those days. Too many people, expecting too much, for too little......)

you can't use a diy kit to refill from empty, ive tried it, as the compresor wont cycle with it totally empty you cant do it. which is why a pro kit attaches to both low and high side.

what went wrong with the old compressor??? if its just the clutch on the front it can be changed without removing the compressor.
if the old one has blown up the debris will be in the system and it will need flushing before the new compressor is fitted and a new drier fitted or debris will damage the new one.
the problem with diy refills is that they just add gas to a system full of air.
a proper regas involves putting the system under a deep vacuum to boil off any moisture before adding the correct amount of gas and oil...about 500 grams...gas is added by weight.your diy can cant vac the system or accuratly add the right weight of gas.
if it needs flushing you will need a pro as i dont think the likes of qwik fit go past regassing..ie taking the easy money.
when i did car a/c for a living i got a lot of work from people who had been to qwikfit and were turned away when they found a leak etc...i used to leave my card with the local qwik fits etc.

as a new compressor will probably double the value of most cars a good used one would be a more cost effective option...the good bit with the rx8 is that they are fairly easy to get at to change unlike some cars.

no idea whats caused it. symptom is that the pully is stuck causing the belt to fail in a cloud of smoke. this is the second time its happened.

got a new compressor and took a look at the old one last night. It seems that on the old one the pulley wheel is solid. I can turn the compressor with a ratchet but the pulley wheel is solid. Im going to try and remove it tonight with a bearing puller but no idea why this could be?

Cheers.
I've tried to get the old clutch off and I just cant shift that little bolt. Any tips on getting it out as it's a bit tight down there and I'm struggling to stop the compressor spinning

you need a tool like this to hold the clutch while you undo the bolt.
