Requires new rear tyres.

Post by Ollie »

So just checked my tread depth on all 4 tyres to discover my rears are down to wear markers. (Really kicking myself for not checking this when I bought the car!)

Currently the car has Rainsport 3s 225/40/R18s 92Y's on all 4 corners. It's currently lowered and seeing as the fronts still have quite a lot of tread left on them I'm only looking to swap the rears. I know the OEM rated tyres are 95Ys.

Is it best to go back to OEM sizing even if Im only changing one axles worth of tyres? I'll probably be going Falken Avensis K510s in either OEM or whats currently on it size wise. Help would be muchly appreciated.

Generally speaking,it's best to keep all four corners running the same size rubber - the DSC is remarkably adept at detecting mis-matches ;)

Ah yeah I remember reading about that. So sticking to 225/40/R18 would be better than mix/matching 40s and 45s? Does the load index being 92 vs 94 matter in the eyes of the insurer though? Like thats a 40Kg weight difference each corners rated for.

the load rating's close enough, but when you can, equip the car with the correct spec rubber ;)

Just had a look in my manual which I probably should have done before. Mazda have the 225/45/18s at 91 load rating. So realistically, a lower profile with a higher weight index would be roughly the same? Tis just that manufacturers that make 225/45/18s have 94 load indexes now?
