Engine Issue

Post by Mog1 »

Good evening,

I am wondering if anyone can help me diagnose a running fault with my 40th anniversary RX-8. Aka ‘my baby’.
Since January I have had a company car and only use my baby at weekends. But last Sunday, after I started it up. The revs became erratic, Revving to 3000 then back, in a rhythmic style. It made it worse when clutch disengaged.

Could this be that I need to change ignition coil and leads, I was intending on upgrading them anyway. As an aside, no warning light was on.

I am also intending on having the engine ported this year, any rotary specialists in Edinburgh area?

Has the car been started and not taken for a run?
This can screw with the idle fuelling, as well as being very bad for the engine.

Does the idle settle after a run out?

I took the car for a couple of miles and it didn’t seem to make it any better. It was quite a jerky drive and I was concerned that it would damage the engine/car. I have never started the car without going for a run and always hit the beep a couple of times.

I had this after my car was off the road and in storage with the insurance company, it also threw up a code for throttle body, cleaned the connectors and after it had run for a bit and got upto temperature and cycled on and off it sorted itself out. I put it down to damp in the electrics

We had the same issue with Adam's car after it had been sitting for a while and the battery went flat.
New battery and pedal stomp fixed it.

Thanks to you all. I know it has been many months but my baby is now fully running again and passed MOT. Turns out engine issue appeared to be oil in the throttle body sensor as after I cleaned it out with a cotton bud the car ran perfectly again. I have now joined the club and paid the penalty. I swear driving a front wheel drive 2.0 diesel golf GT for a year makes me really appreciate the ‘8’.

Great to hear Image
Which sensor do you mean?
The one on the top of the accordion connecting the air filter box to the throttle body or the throttle position sensor on the throttle pedal in the cabin?

It was the sensor under the bonnet, the one near the connection between air hose and throttle body. It was a case of ‘fiddling’ and in this case it worked out for me.
