Killed it :(
Well I've killed her at 49486, known low compression but did hot start after 6-8 seconds of cranking ... Anyway.
Went for an overtake hit 65 and there was a crunching noise followed by the engine shutting down, pulled over, unable to restart, sounds down on compression on one rotator.... Bugger!!

Re: Killed it :(
It would be worth checking that it's not just a massive oil burp.
At least two guys on this forum over the years have bought "blown-up" cars for parts, only to find that there was nothing wrong other than a soaked MAF and intake hose, plus a dead coil in the second case - bought as an ex-trade-in from a Mazda dealer that should have known better.
The symptoms can be very similar, as can a failed rear stationary bearing, with all the devastation that entails

Re: Killed it :(
This was a very definite metal crunching noise, it no longer sounds the same on turn over. I will have a quick luck now but it doubt it will be the cause.
I can rule out coil packs as I fitted a new set of RRP coils last week.

Re: Killed it :(
Actually the most likely time for a component to fail is when it's new.

Re: Killed it :(
This is so spooky. Almost identical thing has happened to me! Drove to London yesterday, felt down on power on motorway. Put foot down coming off junction and swear i heard a metallic sound but it kept running. Was only a couple of miles from destination. Going down hill I changed gear and it cut out. Managed to bump start while rolling. Felt seriously sluggish. Limped to the driveway I had booked to park on. Now I fear it’s over for her. Sounds ropey.Dan-Lincs wrote: ↑Tue Apr 16, 2019 1:51 pmWell I've killed her at 49486, known low compression but did hot start after 6-8 seconds of cranking ... Anyway.

Crazy thing is I think the mileage is also just under 50k.
Now it’s stuck in London on some poor sods driveway

Re: Killed it :(
I had similar about 4 years ago at around 50k, picked wife up from airport, got onto motorway and floored her, Bang rattle pop plus sparks from rear as it was at night in a tunnel. Turned out it was only the cat killing itself.

Re: Killed it :(
Seems 50k is a bad number!
Sadly no cat to worry about however
I will pull the plugs out when I get a chance and see if there are any metal fragments there.
Thinking back bigpete did suspect that last time he saw it just after I bought it that the rear stationary was making a slight noise, it was noticed that it had the near side oil cooler pipe done as well so may of been damaged then (split and lost pressure??) ... Could of finally let go?

Re: Killed it :(
Got a text from Bigpete today saying the new engine is in and shes ready for collection (He had a 231 engine in stock with compression of around 7), he did notice that I had 1 x broken spring on the rear and shocks were in bad shape so hes replaced them as well.. Top man!

Re: Killed it :(
Fixed! Different vehicle entirely, can't get used to the instant starting both hot and cold, less vibration at idle, pulls much much harder to the red line.
Crunch on gear change from 2nd to 3rd at high rpm has totally vanished aswell, not sure the reason for that tho?
Roll on the tear down of the old block when Pete gets time to check the failure cause.
Again a big shout out to bigpete for getting this sorted in under a week!
