Removing flywheel in car

Post by Secla »

Ive got to the point where I need to remove the big flywheel bolt. My dewalt impact gun “should” have enough oomph to get it off ! I have had to use 2 step down adapters on the socket to fit the 1/2 inch gun and also the engines just sitting on its mounts so I think I’m loosing a lot of the torque just shaking things about ? Any ideas before I just leave the flywheel alone !

BigPete and I managed with his 1/2" electric impact with what I believe was the exact same set of socket and step downs.

Any loose extension will be losing you torque of course so if you can get a 1" to 1/2" then that should be a bit better I'm sure. Better yet, big ol' air impact.

The gun supposedly has 950nm of torque so should get it undone but the amount of adapter I think is loosing a lot as there’s a lot of shaking going on 😬
Don’t have access to air or anything else so if I can’t get it off with this it’ll just have to stay

make a locking tool up for the flywheel. a old starter gear and a couple of lengths of flat bar stock should do it.........

and 950nm is probably not enough, so a decent 1” breaker bar should do it...

No idea specifics of an 8 but can you not lock a pry bar into the teeth and use a breaker bar.

Fly wheels locked. A breaker bar would probably mean getting the car a lot higher if the ground + probably pricey

In my experience, a breaker bar isn't as effective as a good impact.
I've had an engine strapped to something with a 3/4" drive breaker bar that's a few feet long, and swung off it until you can see it bending, to no avail. Borrowed the landlord's air impact gun and there wasn't even any hesitation.

If it's a particularly tight one, and an impact won't shift it, a breaker bar will put a lot of strain through the rear iron casting which isn't particularly strong.

Applying heat is often a good way to get stubborn blots shifted but that isn't an option on the flywheel.

However, shock cold might be.

Ideally a professional plumbers pipe freezer*

or a can of freeze spray

this stuff works well on subframe and engine mount bolts

You'll still have to thump it with some heavy impact tool.
