Car has a rough idle on cold start and engine light is ON?

The last two times I started my car, it idles rough for around 30 seconds and the CEL is ON. After around 30 seconds, the engine is smooth and delivers the power till red line but the engine light is still illuminated?

Any idea what it could be? Can anyone be kind enough to scan my car using an OBDII reader? I live in NW London - Harrow. Thanks

UPDATE:

Reset the ESS by pressing the brake pedal 20 times and started the car today and it turned over fine with no noise, however the CEL was still ON. I will hopefully get a scan soon.

Prior to this there was nothing wrong the the engine, it idled fine and pulled strongly to redline. Compression was taken last year with good readings.

There's no way to guess what might be causing the CEL, it could be something doing irreparable damage, or it might be something trivial.

I've just dropped in to visit plas87 after he sent me a PM (I'm still on the original list and local), and run a code scanner: it is a P0301. There's low mpg as well (about 13-14mpg). Had a good chat about the car and as a PZ with ~110k miles and 1 engine rebuild behind it.

Update - The code was erased and I took the car for a spin last night. This time the CEL did not re-appear however, I did feel that the car felt a little under powered in the lower RPMs, especially in 1st gear. The spark plugs have been in the car for the last 2 years and 15k miles, so might be a time to replace them...

Thanks It was a pleasure to go for a drive with a fellow enthusiast in the passenger seat and take the car through some of its paces as a point of reference. For info the persistent CEL codes will normally reappear after the second drive of the car and the technical manual points to a number of things to check (spark plugs, HT leads, eccentric shaft sensor, among others).

Hope you can get all of this sorted so you can get back to enjoying the car.

Update -

The old ignition coils were removed and it transpired that they were fakes, from the likes of Ebay! The entire ignition system was replaced: coils, leads and plugs with Rotary Revs D585. The car revs happily now and starts fine, showing no CEL. I have now however noticed a weird 'swooshing' noise coming from the glove box area when the RPM is around 6k and above. Sounds like water moving through pipes. This wasn't really present before. Any idea?
