Have I got the right part?

Post by RX8765 »

Hi there, in prep for my upcoming MOT I'm trying to sort an advisory from last time: "Offside front anti-roll bar linkage worn but not seriously weakened (2.4.G.1)"

On the Rotary Revs store I can see they sell an item called "Front left hand drop link".

Is this the part in question that needs replacing? Also, if I'm replacing one side with a shiny new part is it recommended to replace the other side too so things aren't unbalanced?

Any advice appreciated!

I would consider offside to be the right hand side ( drivers side )
I would replace the fronts as a pair or even all four, the rears are different and I believe unhanded

Only in this case replacing the pair or all four would just be good practise and won't actually impact the handling of car, unlike replacing a spring or damper unit.

Basically, if one has broken (or is breaking) then the other9s) can't be far behind.
Sometimes the action of replacing one side, jacking the car up, is sufficient to cause the otherside to fail, if it was already weak.

Take a look at this too

Could've done with reading that before I did mine!
Ended up using Nut splitter and hacksaw to get nut off, but that looks far easier....

Thanks for the link to the guide, I tried a search but missed that thread somehow. Also learned that offside means drivers side which will surely save me future embarrassment!

Although, in theory, replacement drop links should be functionally the same as the original equipment links, I wouldn't assume that to be the case. They could be a slightly different length, which would be a bad thing for the car handling. Also, you can't be sure the links on the car are original Mazda items, so what is on the car may already be a slightly different length.

For that reason I would always replace drop links in pairs.

Got 2 different brand OEM-quality drop links here - they are different lengths indeed.

Granted, significant differences in the droplink lengths would create a static force between the two wheels.

However, I would only expect this if either the existing or replacement links were deliberately shorter to allow the arb-link angle to remain close to 90° with lowering springs.

My statement assumed that both the existing and replacement links were within original specs.

@RX8765 have the current droplinks got blue plastic dots on the back?
The original Mazda droplinks had four blue plastic rivet heads on each end and it's "missing heads" that's usually the first indication of imminent failure
