To scoop or not to scoop?
So I got my hands on a revi beats air box,
And have been looking for a scoop to go with, and I found a guy on eBay selling something that looks very much like the revi scoop for around £100.
But is it a waste of money?
I know I won't be getting many gains anyway with the air box, but is it worth going the whole hog or not?

Re: To scoop or not to scoop?
The scoop is the better bang for bucks option, personally I have both, but a good mod is scoop with standard box and decent panel filter

Re: To scoop or not to scoop?
There's (almost) no benefit in fitting the Revi Beat Airbox.
There is noticeable benefits fitting the Revi Ram scoop, either with the Revi airbox or the OEM.
Revi have been trying to shutdown the guy that's making cheap clones of the Revi scoop to sell on ebay, but it's proving difficult with International Patents and copyright laws.
However, the genuine article is made of a tough resilient plastic (ABS?) whereas I believe the clones are fibreglass.
Last time I checked it also didn't look as if the clones had the rain-water trap and drain arrangement, possibly to get around the patent issues.
This may be okay if you're only going to drive in dry weather...

So considering how much we spend on our cars, I may as well buy the scoop while its still available

I have to ask this
Just where in London did you find the space to hit the beep that many times
People who live and drive in big cities will normally see a benefit from Cataclean.

Re: To scoop or not to scoop?
That's the clone listed on ebay and it's made of FRP - Fibre Reinforced Plastic
It's way cheaper than the original and who's to say if it's any good?
Do you fancy being the guinea pig?

Re: To scoop or not to scoop?
Maybe,
I should have read the small print though!
Genuine scoops seem really hard to come buy, so it might be worth a punt?

Re: To scoop or not to scoop?
In case anyone isn't sure, ftp is just another name for fiberglass. I believe fiberglass is a trademarked name, but frp isn't.

Re: To scoop or not to scoop?
Lel. Wish I'd seen that before buying a genuine RB one!
You can buy a new genuine from MRP or LC Rotary. Second hand ones are like gold dust tho.
I say try the cheap one... but then it's not my car

Re: To scoop or not to scoop?
The scoop certainly makes the most difference of the two. It has a noticeable effect at motorway speeds, gaining a little more pull. I no longer feel I have to drop from 5th to 4th on the motorway to steadily build up a bit of speed. Don't get me wrong though, you will still be dropping a cog or two to overtake quickly. The gains are nothing vast, and you'd certainly notice more of a difference with a lightweight flywheel or remap.

Re: To scoop or not to scoop?
Well, it's generally that anything called fibreglass will be bulk glassfiber held together with a binder (epoxy, vinyl, polyester) - whereas FRP is usually a plastic - ABS, Polycarbonate, Nylon (or a copolymer of 2 or more of them) with 20-30% glass or carbon fibre added to stiffen the plastic and in increase the HDT. The fibre fill in that case is generally microscopic particles.
All the plastics under the bonnet on the RX8 will probably be the same thing, they need to be to cope with the temperature - if you find the markings on covers and boxes they'll say "PA6 30% GF" or "20FRP ABS/PC", etc, etc.

So would that duct be made made of some sort of plastic or have I misread your answer?RenesisRaceBuggy wrote: ↑Mon Mar 04, 2019 6:45 pmWell, it's generally that anything called fibreglass will be bulk glassfiber held together with a binder (epoxy, vinyl, polyester) - whereas FRP is usually a plastic - ABS, Polycarbonate, Nylon (or a copolymer of 2 or more of them) with 20-30% glass or carbon fibre added to stiffen the plastic and in increase the HDT. Yes, it'll be abs/poly or nylon with some chopped fibre in it at a guess.

Re: To scoop or not to scoop?
My main concern - which I'd look closely at if I went for that cheap copy - is to make sure it has some way of trapping rain and moisture and draining it. Panel filters can take a little moisture but full on rain will not end well.
The pukka RB one has a little 'shelf' in the back of it with some holes in to deal with rain.
I'd say buy it, then if it turns up and doesn't have them return it for a refund under distance selling regs. You have a few days to change your mind when it arrives.
If you do this take MANY pictures, please. For... research

Re: To scoop or not to scoop?
I'm sure someone will correct me, but is the actual draw from the air box so strong it would pull rain in? I'd assume it would hit the back and drain back out ,

Re: To scoop or not to scoop?
You totally could. Just buying the cheap one and drilling a couple of carefully located holes through the FRP would be a budget solution.
Probably at track and motorway speeds in wet conditions where momentum is pushing the air through the scoop in addition to the 'suck'. The inside of the RB scoop is laminated and slick too... unless the inside arrives scratched to hell like mine was. You'll have seen how rainwater glides up and over bodywork at high speed. Add suction to that effect. You can hear the scoop making a 'whoosh' noise. It's hilarious and makes the car sound like a vacuum cleaner. Definitely don't buy a scoop for the sound.
I've put a gap between my scoop and air box to act as an extra rain gutter. Means that I lose/disturb some air but I was nervous about water ingress (particularly as I drive it in all weather) and was curious whether it would hamper performance much. I'm data logging to see if the modification makes a notable difference and have a few more things to experiment with.
