Even on the motorway cruise may not be so good for economy.
If you come to an incline cruise will apply throttle to manetain speed whereas you may decide not to and allow speed to bleed off knowing there is a decline coming up to regain speed without using extra fuel.

Hats off to him because that would have been a long demanding trip. Yes I noticed he got excited with the coffee Image

Good point warpcoil. Even if I had cruise control on the 8, I'd never use it.
Haha I know the feeling my last fill-up I managed 160 miles but I have been giving it some. I managed 230 on a mix of dual carriageway ways going up to Chester and I was proud of that!

I certainly am enjoying the series and a few work colleagues and friends outside of RX8 ownership are also watching. I am trying to convert them to rotary lol

Having pondered the idea of an rx8 for however many years, just thought i'd drop a comment to say that it's this Car Throttle series that has finally encouraged me to take the plunge! So from that point of view, Alex must have done something right.

Really enjoying the series. My thanks goes to everyone involved :)

Watching the last episode today, and with a 140 mile drive down the M5 to the west country tomorrow, its tempting to pump up the tyres and see how far the R3 with its low profile tyres can manage.

On second thought, considering mine will go about 15 miles after the yellow fuel light to the end of the dial, I highly doubt mine is in any condition to even attempt a 'Hypermile'.

Hi Guys, been out of the country for the past week, so not seen all the replies!

Firstly, thanks for the kind words on the state of my car - I'm happy with it to say the least, but the bodywork needs some work... Also, whilst filming my PAS went on the fritz so need to look in to that properly :(

It was a great day of filming and a right blast going up and down country lanes being rather obnoxiously loud :D

Here's an edited still from the shoot:
IMG-20190131-WA0020-01.jpeg

As for the hyper-miling episode, that was partially my fault! Alex casually said "I want to see if Felix can make the 300 club" - to which I replied with "Man up and join the 400 club" Currently I believe he is one of just 3 RX8 owners to have hit the club, me and another chap on here who owns a 192. So between all of us, we have proven that any version of RX8 can hit the 400 mark with a bit of dedication and a loooong journey.

As for the comments on cruise control, Dave is right that cruise is - in itself - not as intelligent as a human driver and thus wouldn't be able to achieve the same economy as a human. That said, my 400 run was with cruise control. I found that on the motorway it stopped my speed from creeping up, which was one of the main reasons I managed 400 miles.

Also, the interesting point around the odometer being so off was interesting. I have tested mine against Google Maps and other cars and the R3 seems to be accurate, I wonder how many others aren't quite as accurate?

Someone in the Youtube comments said they want to see a track battle with Felix and Phil, that would be awesome.
For those who have been keeping track of Alex and CTs social media, there was a day out where they took CT Matt's MX5 out on track alongside the RX8. I believe this is for an upcoming episode, although there was a written article by Matt on CTs website about it. Was interesting, although some of he info not 100% accurate/ not thoroughly explained :thumleft:

I think that's a fair write up on the whole.

I wouldn't say Curborough is where an 8 particularly shines though. It's a very tight course and you often find yourself out of the power band.
Stints are usually too short to get things up to temp but I imagine they just hooned it for the whole day.

Perhaps the most important part is how, if you want a cheap RX-8, save up and buy an expensive one! And in most cases you'll spend far less in the very near future.

Premix??? Premium fuel???
None of that for me! (touching wood as I type in the hope I get away it - as they don't condone that sort of thing in the office)

Well, the car has been remapped (I imagine quite aggressively given the power output for a street port) so I assume the requirement for premium fuel is down to that - but the fact it's been mapped isn't actually mentioned in the article.

Likewise, most engine builders - especially on S1s - recommend premix. So whilst not a 100% requirement that info may well have not made it across to Matt through the chinese whispers between Rotary Revs, Alex, Production teams etc.

That's what I meant when I said rough factual inaccuracies :thumleft:

i think the odometer missreading could be down to the over pressure he was running on the tyres, though wouldn't a larger rolling radius cause it to read under?
Thanks, Stu

Just to add ref to miles, all car speedo are set a bit higher, ie compare to gps on flat level road. Therefore over a long distances as such, higher miles travel’d reading.

Weirdly not always the case. My mate's 1 series records about 75mph at a validated 70mph, yet the speedo will tick up 70 miles every hour, not 75 :)

Not tested on the RX8 yet, though. easy enough to do, though. Sit at 60mph on the speedo and time for 5 minutes. If the odo goes up 5 miles then that's the ticket, if it goes up 4.8 (or whatever) then it's closer to real life.
