Car Throttle 'Living with a rotary' - Any Questions or requests?

Post by Dr. FrankenRex »

Hi Guys,

I'm meeting up with Alex on Monday next week (hopefully) and will be doing a bit of a double feature with his car and mine.

That leads nicely on to the opportunity to pass some community feedback on about the series as a whole, and where you'd like it to go next. There's been a fair few videos out there now, mostly around the rebuild and failed dyno session before the build.

There are a couple of videos already out there, including one that covers an attempt to hyper-mile an RX8 over 400 miles. Those of you that know me, know that I have managed it in an R3, but to manage what he's attempted in an S1 is nuts. I would strongly recommend watching the video when it's out :thumleft:

So, what else would people be interested in seeing? Is there anything with the previous videos you dislike? Is there anything that is incorrect in your opinion?

I can't guarantee any of the comments will reach the video itself, but I can guarantee that I will highlight everything to Alex when I next meet him :thumright:

Cheers,
Dr.F

Having watched a few of these videos already including the recent rebuild and dyno I was keen to know what the long term goal of the car was.. more power, tuning, FI, handing improvements?

I am particularly nerdy and love the more technical stuff going into the low level details of any restoration video. However the car throttle approach is generally more aimed at the casual mass appeal which I understand why. Which is why the rebuild video was so nice to see.

As a BMW and RX8 fan, I’ve enjoyed the last couple of series - now I’d like to see him fund MY rebuild!

But seriously, I’d like him to dig into the remapping options (beyond porting) to understand what can be done on a plug and play or custom map basis.

I believe he was back at Surrey Rolling Road this week so wondering what the results are looking like.

Doriftuuuuuuu featuruuuuuuu ;)

Throw it many abuses (within reason) and try to blow it up (but fail, of course).
Track days are where they shine even as standard, show off their good side. The fuel economy makes them a weird daily (even at 400 mile/tank) so go have some fun for the single digit mpg and show that they're not just fragile millennial snow flake time bombs.

Track day! I brought mine at the same time as the show and I'm going on my first track day with you guys in February at Castle Combe. It would be interesting to see some basic track prep and show the RX-8 getting some proper use.

Series so far has concentrated on engine woes, rebuild, power curve and sorting out issues. :-k

Time to highlight what it does best - bang per buck and handling? :thumleft:

Maybe back to back tests highlighting it's bang per buck vs a golf gti/civic type r etc of a 'similar' price bracket. E.g. a drag race (for pure speed comparison) and then on a race circuit showing off it's handling and lap time potential vs 'the competition'??
All a bit 'Top Gear' but should highlight the incredible value for money the 8 has always been.

Assuming Alex's car is actually straight!

Cheeky but would it be totally mad to offer Alex a few quick stints at the AGM track day at Combe?
Good exposure for the club too I'm sure - renting out the whole track to ourselves. Who wouldn't want in on a club like that :p

Re: Car Throttle 'Living with a rotary' - Any Questions or requests?

Post by Dr. FrankenRex »

Hey peeps, great bits of feedback from everyone!

To answer some of the points raised (as I've discussed some things with Alex already):

- Track days. Alex said that the reception to their BMW track weapon (and other track stuff they have done) hasn't been as widely received as some of the more 'every day' stuff, so sadly major or regular track excursions are not likely to make an appearance. That said I have chatted to him about coming along on the 23rd of Feb to the AGM day. Whether or not he brings a film crew, goes out in Felix on track or whether he just jumps in with some of the enthusiastic owners I dunno. Time will tell.
- Remapping. That isn't something I've discussed with him, but it is something I've chatted to Ben about and there is not an appetite from Ben to discuss the intricacies of the mapping options for 8s. Whether that is different on the video they've done (there is a video coming out of their mapping and dyno session up at RR) I don't know - so it may well have been addressed.
- Long term goals - Alex doesn't really have one AFAIK. It's really going to be steered by what people request - hence putting this thread out there. I think discussing plans around future mods would be a good one - is he planning on modding suspension? is he planning on modifying the bodywork (beyond repairing the knackered door/ wing)? things like that. I'll add them to the list! :D
- Trying to kill it - Awkward spoiler here, his adventures with a rotary aren't going well  Ignoring the rebuild (they intentionally bought one that would need a build doing) it has had a few little issues, including a fuel pump and an intake issue which I believe is ongoing - but SHHH, it's a secret. On the flip side, I do agree that getting him to abuse the engine like there's no tomorrow with a view to disproving the reliability concerns would be a good one.
- DORIFTO - definitely, although probably along the lines of the track days :D
- bang-per-buck stuff - Fully agree. I think the reason it's focussed on what it takes to get it in the right place is because that is where a lot of '8 buyers are going to be. Buying a 'lemon' of a car for £600 and then it needing a rebuild. There are plans to put the car through it's paces lots over the next few vids.
- Comparison with other cars - I think that's a great one, personally, and will definitely push Alex on it. Even if you total up the amount of cash he's 'spent' on the car and rebuild, there still isn't much - in our opinions - that comes close for that kind of money. Assuming he paid list price for that engine build, you're talking the whole thing has cost him maybe £3,500. Not much comparable you can get for that money, so comparing to a golf or other hatch, or perhaps something like a 350Z would be an interesting one. OK it was done when they were released, but now the cars have aged, which one stands the test of time better etc?
- How good the car is - One thing that I need to point out is that Alex really does love the car. It's not come across in the videos yet because he hasn't been shown actually driving it. Let's not forget, the reason this series exists is because he drove my car and fell in love with the rotary engine and the RX8. I'm 99% certain that will come across in later episodes :thumleft:

That is an interesting note on the AGM track day, maybe offer him a 'complimentary' 20 min session or something? One of the reasons I wanted him to come along is to showcase just how enthusiastic the OC is and the kind of events we offer. He has already said that he's going to sign up as a member of the OC, which is great, but perhaps it would give us an opportunity as a club to show off what we're all about?

I imagine that there are lots of RX8 owners who watch the series without even knowing the club exists...

EDIT - ultimately the whole point of the CT series is to try and reach/ appease every petrol head, so I imagine it's a hard balance of nerdy technical stuff and 'OMG IT SOUNDS GREAT' kinda stuff. I, personally, think they're doing a good job of it so far!

Tbf I think they've already covered a lot of what living with a rotary is like.

- Buy car cheap
- Disappointing dyno run
- Engine rebuild
- IT'S NOT BROKEN AGAIN HONEST, IT'S SOMETHING ELSE THIS TIME

Zoom zoom

It does seem difficult to see how a track day would place in their target content but hopefully there's room for a small part of it in a video somewhere somehow, as an aside rather than a full length feature.

Clutching at straws here but perhaps a quick demonstration (again as an aside) that you can happily fit 4 adults and their gear in one. Anyone who's tried to do the same in an FD RX-7 will understand how much difference that little extra room makes :D

I hesitate.....

Should he do an episode on the recalls? As an 04 car I suspect his will need all of them done. It could lead nicely onto a segment about the importance of specialists, and the reputation of dealers.

2 sets of golf clubs and 2 trolleys in the boot too!

Skit where he takes 2 mates to play golf, his nephew to nursery and then takes himself to the track day. Picks them all up on the way home too - Practical sports car in 1 day trip. Genius.

Very good point on the recalls Pete - and one I'll raise with him.

Sadly trying to highlight the ineptitude of dealers may be tricky - afterall, a garage isn't going to want to be filmed if they're pants, and a garage that is being filmed is unlikely to put on a bad show as it were.

Also, great idea Juey. Sounds like a fun one for the 23rd of Feb...! :P

Even if "regular" track day use is out of the question, I agree that one would be worth it to help show off the car's handling, assuming he's replaced those broken rear springs of course ;)

I've really enjoyed the series so far, and loads of people at work also especialy liked the tear-down and rebuild videos, as the detail the RR guys went in to was brilliant. I've already fed back to Josh on that point.

I have one idea for a feature. Something along the lines of a practicality test – how many people or how much luggage can you carry on say a long haul family holiday trip type thing. I dunno, top gear style of silly challenges etc. I used my as a daily whilst my daily estate car was in a few too many parts, and I could fit a weeks worth of crap including bicycles into it quite easily for example…

Maybe some before and after power runs with specific after market goodies, like coils, exhaust, decat or high flow, and maybe some track days with handling mods, like brakes, suspension and tyres.

Fuel pump and intake issues you say? Which scoundrel sold him this car?

Personally, as mentioned previously, once the car is running right I would like to see the series turn towards highlighting just why we RX8 owners erm, own them. Getting out on the road/track and describing how it feels to drive. I realise this has been done already to a certain extent in the video with your car Dan but going in to some more detail about the unique engine and handling feel.
I have been driving a 350z daily for a few weeks and whilst it is a decent car, I don’t think it can stand up to the RX8 in terms of fun so comparisons to similar type cars would be interesting to see too.

This is a good one. I got 3 people in mine and all the camping gear etc. and went to Le Mans! I built a CAD model of the boot and got everyone to send me the dimensions of their items so I could pack it digitally before leaving as we wouldn’t be able to check before hand!

Other suggestions would be smoking tyres, donuts and drifting.

I would like to see a comparison test between his RX8 (once running well) and a GT86/BRZ as that is the RX8’s contemporary rival.
Handling, acceleration, lap time, accommodation etc etc
It could be a modern vs old type thing.

To be fair I think track days and track prep is a big part of owning a modified / performance car in my eyes and didn't think the BMW stuff was badly received? Maybe it was because it was a BMW...? Yes some of their "how much does a 440k car loose in BHP" and other productioms they have done have fetched high viewers on YouTube but the track stuff still stood admirably there. Maybe it's more of a case of been there and done that ? Which is fair enough and I can understand that they need to target their videos to a wider audience. But I'm sure if they took the RR guys to anything it would get lots of views :D comedy gold.

Just thinking out loud though what else are you going to do with the car? Go to the shops, break some speed limits trying out his new rebuild and mapped car or hoon around some B roads and hit a tractor and go through a hedge at 9.5k. It's got to be part of the fun and a must to take it around a track. Top gear / grand tour never get bored of it and neither do I.
