Appears to me (inspector Clouseau mode) that the economy run was done before the Pettit exhaust was put on as the old exhaust is on the car.
I.e. this was the rebuild run in period, get the 1000 miles out of the way run.

Subsequently we know the SSV solenoid packed up.

Any other supporting evidence that driving at 50mph for 8 hours makes the valve stick and fry the solenoid?

My time line may be to cock, let me know if it is!

I thought the whole point of running in was not to give it the same continual load. . 🤔 (but keep the revs down)

Hi peeps - clarification time! :D

Alex had already done the run-in period as required - multiple loads etc. etc. and had gone up to RR to get it mapped and sorted. During the dyno session they found out the fuel pump was dying and couldn't shift enough fuel above 7k rpm. Whilst waiting for the fuel pump they did the eco run, then went to RR after the eco run to have the final map put on, as well as the pettit zorst system :)

The videos haven't been released chronologically :thumleft:

I think Juey's point could be valid. The SSV opens at about 3750rpm, and therefore in normal driving it is constantly opening and closing. In the economy run the SSV spent at least 8 hours in the closed position, while the engine was kept cold, and (presumably) all sorts of gunk was building up. When the SSV was finally called into action it may well have seized in place.

The SSV is the only valve in the intake that is routinely exercised, even in moderate driving. You don't need to rag the car to keep this valve moving. The only ways to fix this valve in one position are:
- Spend hours and hours driving very gently in town.
- Do an economy run....

We all know you never drive an 8 permanently at low revs around town, so why do we think an economy run should be problem free? I wonder if Mazda should have put more thought into the lubrication of all those intake valves.... :-k

Except the SSV didn't seize.

The electrical solenoid on the back of the UIM stopped working.

OK. I don't know if it seized or not. I just think Juey's analysis is plausible. It seems a remarkable coincidence that the solenoid randomly failed at almost exactly the same time that the car was driven for an extended period with the SSV fixed on one position. But coincidences happen. Sods law. Assume make an ass of u and me. etc. etc.

(I know the fix was to replace the solenoid, but maybe the new solenoid had enough umph to get the SSV moving again, or maybe someone gave the SSV a kick while trouble shooting the issue, or maybe ragging the car with a failed solenoid freed off the SSV so that the new solenoid didn't have to work so hard. I don't know. I'm guessing. But without a randomised double-blind test, so are we all ;) )

I have done a long return journey of about 8 hours and kept the rpm below 3750 with no issues. Also, after the economy run it was mapped and dyno'd at RR's hub dyno with no issues.

If I was exercising my skills of deduction, I'd say it is just an unrelated coincidental failure

Or maybe maybe maybe maybe maybe maybe all is just as simple as it seems and one of the Mitsubishi parts on the intake failed as they do quite often.

Also I don't see how a vacuum solenoid can differ the amount of oomph it delivers. It's either open or is isn't. A diminished vacuum reading would be some other intake issue.

A vacuum solenoid can either;
- function correctly
- stick open
- stick closed
- leak vacuum
- be sticky (delayed) in opening and/or closing

None of the above being impacted by the resistance of the load.

A vacuum actuator can also fail in much the same ways, but these can be significantly impacted by the resistance of the load.

If I'm hearing the reports correctly, it was the solenoid that had to be replaced, not the actuator.

Something I'd quite like to see would be a 192, 231 comparison.

If I still had my old one I would have offered it up but sadly it's now long gone.

Was good to see a bit of a shake down on the track. As he says it may not be as "scary/fun" as the MX5 but didn't half handle well! Just goes to show what the car is capable of and I'm sure I would much prefer a well balanced car over a black flag causing hooligan car lol

And keep in mind that MX5 was heavily modded. A stock NA or NB MX5 are completely different to what we saw and (IMO) not as scary or fun as a stock 8.
Nice to see the 8 get a pat on the back.

Also worth noting that the times comparison was as a result of the suggestions on here, so good shout guys! Go's to show how well sorted the RX8 is, even on a track that many would say doesn't play to the RX8's strengths well enough

I hope they’re valid bids - these auctions have a habit of attracting fools who mess around.

Shame the series is done too.

Yeah eBay is a wash with it ATM nightmare to try and sell anything sometimes

Soooo I guess that brings an end to a rather short series. I guess 10 or so episodes is alright, bit of a shame it feels a bit rushed at the end but hey ho .

Guess I will unsubscribe now lol

Yeah just seems like it was over before it even got started. Was really enjoying the series, everything comes to an end and I know that I have a vested interest already owning s rx-8 but I would have liked a bit more from a living with series.

Don’t know what happened to it but if anyone does know the new owner, I still have the spare keys and service book for it which I forgot to send Alex.
