Did anyone from the club end up buying Felix? I just checked and its SORN, with the MOT running out in July. This makes me think its either a track day tool or its not being used any more!

I remember the auction went round twice (as I placed a bid both times but didn't win) and that it sold for between £3000 and £4000 I think?

It would be nice to know that it is still around after such a short period!

Hey,

I'm new around here so just coming to this after having seen the series earlier in the year and now in the market I would definitely say there is a lack of comparison videos out there. Glad to see it was suggested early in this thread.

CT definitely missed a trick either on the road or a track comparison between the Rx8 and a few alternatives. Maybe a FN2 type-R and a 330i or Audi TT.

Perhaps if there is still a link to CT through the forum you guys could still get it made? I for one would love to see that. :P

Good shout, I'll drop Alex a line but think they've moved on from the rotary.

The club's YoutTube channel is starting up soon, though, so we could always look to do something like that? Failing that I'm doing some similar content on my personal channel and would happily run a comparison of people are happy to let me drive their cars?

Alex has mentioned the RX8 a few times on the Car Throttle podcast, he actually mentioned Felix in this weeks as well saying how good the car was and that he saw it was on sale on Auto trader

I had a good comparison run with a colleagues BMW z4 ( 3.0 Si model) so that car is 1290kg and 261 bhp
mine is a 231 with no goodies like the leather interior and I've taken a few things off it (no secondary air pump, toyo exhaust) so I 'should' be at the same amount of weight ( rx8 weight is 1309kg for the lightest spec)

now an impromptue drag race with a soft 'rolling' start ( got to about 5 mph then floored it) for both cars showed almost identical performance, with both cars side by side for the run ( up to 85 leptons) he pulled away at the lower rev range I'd then recover ground and pull past as he ran out of revs and then lose this ground as I changed gear and repeat the pulling back
I was frankly surprised at this result as I'd have thought he'd trounce me
now I've done a few go faster mods ( cosworth air filter, toyo exhaust, aftermarket 300 cpi cat and mazdaedit tune) but still

either that or the BMW was knackered

It is an interesting comparison, to be honest. And the RX8 is surprising when it gets wound up properly, it's at the bottom end it really doesn't perform great. I took mine to Santa Pod (before the bridgeport silliness) and I lost SO much time (relatively speaking) in the first 60ft it was unreal. My friends 200bhp 1series diesel made me look slow lol. A rolling start will make a bit of a difference.

Last time we went to Santa Pod for a RWYB day there were two RX-8s in the paddock with broken clutches #-o

Not a bad result Matt considering it's on corners where the 8 really shines. Aside from other things the 8 has such a lower centre of gravity than most cars, including the Z4.

Every time someone comes on this forum calling RX8s slow (usually new owners) I assume their car has a mechanic fault, naff mods, or they simply don't know how to drive. The 8 is a lot faster in a straight line than most people give it credit for. Especially from a rolling start, but even from a well-managed stationary launch. I drive 'enthusiastically' in my area and every drive out someone fancies a go. But no TDI is going to keep pace on these country roads. (waves at turbo lag which people so often claim isn't a thing anymore :salut: )

I'm always a bit miffed by the obsession with straight line speed though. Our 3.0D V6 1890kg XF is faster 0-60mph (on paper) than my R3... but there's a good reason my wife drives that and not the 8. A quick bus is still a bus, and if I wanted to drive a bus I'd go work for TFL and get paid at the same time.

I think Alex misses Felix. Got under his skin it did.

I don't know what you mean, it is a very high, pointed piece of rock. ;)

I agree, VR wouldn't have been my first choice, but when it came up at a silly low price it was daft not to acquire it!

I misread that as "in the back seat of an RX8" and my mind immediately went "Well at least he'd fit"

I would definitely be up for a Club YouTube/CarThrottle Collab, I think there's loads of stuff we could do that's make for great content.

The drag-race type comparison would be great as they have more ready access to a large pool of "other cars" (admittedly most of them are sh*t boxes ) without relying on club members to donate theirs.

We've got a pretty good range of second cars within this club when you think about it. RX-7s, M3, Tesla's, Porsches, Alfas etc all jump to mind. So if club members were willing to donate their cars, we'd have a decent pool.

I have a tuned 335i touring and an RX-7 which would both annihilate my PZ in a straight line, but still find the PZ offers a better drive and it's brisk enough to enjoy while keeping to sensible speeds.

That's a really good idea to be fair. We also have a lot of owners - such as yourself - who have an RX8 as well. They're the kinds of people that would be best placed to review the two back to back. Discuss what they like and dislike about each in relative terms and ultimately why they still own both...

Food for thought, for sure :)

Notwithstanding my location being a pita I have access to a 2003 slk230 kompressor and a stripped rx8, which should be a interesting comparison lol
