Puddle of Water in my passenger side footwell

Post by Paulie »

Not sure what section this should be posted in....
SORNd the car last month, so its been sat outside exposed to the elements, I never had a obvious problem through the summer, but since owning the car in april is seems I have a leak (inch of water), any ideas why I would be letting in water?

Check the drain holes in the bottom of the drivers door aren't clogged up,if they are, water can rise inside the door cavity until it can leak out from behind the door card.

Also, check if it' seems wet around the bonnet release lever on the lower dash,as in this thread on the US forum..

Has the coolant level dropped at all? It could be a leKing heater matrix. Dip your finger in and taste the water, if it's coolant you will know straight away!

Thanks for all the suggestions, finally fitted my coils/plugs/leads and sorted the nasty engine flood today so I could move the car closer to the hose and suck up the puddle with the vax carpet cleaner, going to monitor it but I'm fairly sure its leaking through the door rubbers (checked the window was closed so wasnt that).... I have a full weekend off next week so I will be taking the door card off the plan to stuff suspect areas with news paper and wait for some rain to see what gets wet first

Why wait for rain when you can sit in the car whilst someone sprays water over the car and you can watch for leaks.

Could you use some smoke pellets to pinpoint where the leaks coming from?

We'll bugger me. I just got into the car after work and there's a nice puddle in my passenger side. Followed the path and it's coming from the door card.
Thanks for the info guys. Gotta wait till the rain stops now. Damn it.

The door/window seals aren't designed to be water-tight.

Rain water should run down the window, through the door and out the drains underneath.
There's a plastic sheet bonded to the inner door frame that should keep the back of the door card dry.
However, if the drains get blocked then the door fills with water until it finds a hole through the plastic (puddle light, speaker, etc) and then runs behind the door card and appears inside...

The trick is to poke the drains under the door (when open) and let the water out that way.

If fitted, then the sunroof can also be a source of water into the footwell.
As can a badly replaced screen, or totally blocked cabin air filters....

Just like the old MX5 roof drains then. Their drains behind the doors clog and would need to be poked through with a straightened coat hanger to release the trapped rain water.

Old Mazdas just love a poking it seems.

Ah well bummer. I cleaned out the drain holes and all were unblocked.
Long story short. I applied sound deadening to the outer skins a while back and it may have come loose or I may have not sealed the plastic properly
