Servicing - Oil Filter seized
So I’ve been busy firing with my Rexy to give her a full service, and so far it’s going well (after fighting with some frighteningly tight spark plugs).
I have drained my oil OK but I can’t for the life of me shift the oil filter. Most of the videos online people seem to just undo them by hand but I can’t seem to do this on mine.
I even have the right size oil filter socket for the top I bought but I can’t get a socket in at the angle it’s at, any tips before I start removing all the air intake manifold??

Re: Servicing - Oil Filter seized
You can knock a screw driver right through the filter towards the top and turn the screw driver
Sounds like the previous person was very heavy handed

Alternatively, I find the plier type filter wrenches work well and there is just about enough space to use them.

Re: Servicing - Oil Filter seized
good shout about the screwdriver, just watch you fingers when applying pressure as they tend to rip open like a tin can leaving sharp edges. also apply a bit of oil to the rubber gasket when fitting new one.

Re: Servicing - Oil Filter seized
A proper oil filter socket works the best, at least on the Series 1, where the filter is on top

Thanks all, as I have the proper socket and still struggling to get enough leverage in the space, I think the screwdriver option is next!

Re: Servicing - Oil Filter seized
before you try the screwdriver method (which CAN end incredibly badly) id jack the engine up slightly and remove the engine mounts and lower it down, giving you much better access to the filter.
i know this sounds extreme but its six bolts and i hate the screwdriver method, if its seized on enough, it can tear the filter in half and then you're in a world of hurt!

Re: Servicing - Oil Filter seized
If the filter socket is slipping try degreasing it and the filter and then drape a damp microfiber cloth over the filter and tap the socket back on .
If you can't get enough force on the socket then there's no way that the screwdriver method can work.

Re: Servicing - Oil Filter seized
Need a hand tomorrow?
Done it a couple of times and never had a problem. I have a chain type filter removal tool. Having the ratchet offset from the filter gives more room to give it a proper good YARRRR.
EDIT - I'd remove the UIM ahead of attacking the filter with a screwdriver. It's a pain, but not too bad.

Re: Servicing - Oil Filter seized
I think the issue with the socket is more that I simply can’t get my ratchet in and apply enough force I only have a short handled one and space is to limited for my breaker bar..
I’ll give it another try after Xmas, before trying the other more drastic methods.

Re: Servicing - Oil Filter seized
I have gas-strut bonnet lifters and it makes a world of difference with the bonnet held higher than with the original prop.
A wobble bar socket extention and having the bonnet held open further means I can get plenty of leverage.

Re: Servicing - Oil Filter seized
Are you going in from above (behind intake manifold thing?) or the side? When I tried going from above I simply couldn’t get my extension bar in even with a wobble joint at the end.warpc0il wrote:I have gas-strut bonnet lifters and it makes a world of difference with the bonnet held higher than with the original prop.

Re: Servicing - Oil Filter seized
At the risk of sounding redundant, when you eventually get to fit the new filter,it only needs screwing on until you feel the oil seal start to 'bite',then no more than a little nip extra.
It won't leak, and will certainly come off much easier next time!

Re: Servicing - Oil Filter seized
I had real trouble removing the filter on my first RX8, ended up using a 3 leg tool, the other ones I tried just wouldn't grip well enough

Re: Servicing - Oil Filter seized
Get a knuckle joint for your ratchet. Use that and an extension and it will undo easy.
You can bring the ratchet up to just above the plastic inlet and you can the get some good turns on the ratchet to get it undone.
Banging a screwdriver in is a messy last resort, especially where it is on the s1. It's also a bit hard to bang in to the filter in the first place due to limited space.

Re: Servicing - Oil Filter seized
I use the same one as Mi60o0. Works easily every time, and there is just enough room to get it in.
The problem with the screwdriver method is that it may not work, and if it doesn't then you are immobile....

That thread is very useful, lots I have done incorrect it would seem.. doing it cold for one.warpc0il wrote:A proper oil filter socket works the best, at least on the Series 1, where the filter is on top

Wasn’t aware that a vacuum pump can remove an additional 1.8L of stuck oil as well (although I don’t have one).
One thing I noticed when I changed my air filter it was dripping with oil, and there was a heavy coating of oil in the bottom of the air box. Reading that thread it seems likely someone overfilled it previously!
I’ve cleaned all the box out and changed filter but should I remove the intake system entirely to degrease it?? What kind of issues can this cause?

Re: Servicing - Oil Filter seized
That's most likely the residue of an oil burp..it's worth removing and cleaning the intake hose bewteen airbox and throttle body, including the plastic resonator chamber.
Whilst you've got that off,you could also give the throttle body a scrub out with an old toothbrush and carburettor cleaner

Re: Servicing - Oil Filter seized
If you have a long screwdriver or bar with a blunt screwdriver shaped bed you can tap this against the rolled end of the filter which applies a direct impact force to the rim of the filter. Start at a steep angle to create a notch, once created decrease the angle to generate a more tangential force and hit harder, it will move!
