What happens if you don’t have recall done?

My understanding is the part is coming up to its end of life date and there is no danger at the moment.
Not true. Manufacturers don't do recalls because they care about you and are worried something might happen. They do them because a fault is already killing people and they are liable. In this case the Takata airbags used in the RX8 can blow your face off with shrapnel and people have already died as a result. That's the kind of danger that triggers a recall.

Yes the number of deaths is teeny tiny relative to the number of cars affected, but note that the number of successful deployments is not recorded. Nor the number of faults that resulted specifically in life changing injuries... they only publish the deaths and 'injuries'.

Marketing speak 'continuous improvement' and 'striving to advance' is just that. It will certainly 'negatively impact your driving pleasure' if your loved one has their face removed.

Here's further reading on it: https://www.consumerreports.org/car-rec ... d-to-know/
(I'm in the USA at the moment, and my UK links are a pain to find)

I suspect a drivers airbag recall for the R3 is also coming. Get this recall done tho.

Not sure the drivers airbag is Takata.

Seems the inflator absorbs moisture over time and causes it to inflate the airbag incorrectly.

I got the recall letter through for my car too, though I'm a little confused as I had a load of recalls done last year and I'm sure airbags were one of them..

I just opened my letter for my S1 and my skin went cold... passenger airbag recall.

Can anyone comment on Oxford, Swindon or Basingstoke main dealers please? I like near the Newbury dealer that left my car leaking petrol three times trying to do the fuel recall. I'd rather risk not getting it done than let the incompetent idiots there have my car again.

Thanks,

Mark

A bit of a drive but the guys over in Guildford dealership have really good knowledge of the rx8. I took mine for a load of recalls there last year.

Question about this:

Can you still pass the MOT without this issue being fixed if you inform them that you will have it done very soon? As we are going to the AGM this weekend and the MOT is booked for Friday before we leave :/

My son had a outstanding recall on his Mazda 2 which he forgot about. Went through the MOT without question.

Thanks, I rang up Guildford Mazda and they said it is fine if the airbag warning light is off, which it is. Only other issue is the engine warning light which will make it fail ://////

Because of decat or an actual fault? If the former just get it mapped out dude.

If the CEL is due to decat then it's going to fail emissions anyway, even if the code was to be mapped-out.

True! I hoped popping a cat on for the test was implied. ;)

I'm impressed that people can tolerate having warning lights on at all. They drive me bananas (and potentially indicate a serious fault presumed to be a decat or sensor fault etc).

The error code was to do with the cat, it's not a decat though it's a sports cat so it should pass. Warning light is now off

Strictly speaking the sports cat is also an MOT fail, as none of them are type-approved and that's part of the requirement.
However, this only tends to be an issue if you take the car to a Mazda dealer to do the MOT.
Sports cats are also marginal in cat performance, so you need to make sure that the engine/cat is *really* hot when they do the emissions test and the car hasn't been idling for too long - ideally get them to check the emissions first as soon as you arrive.

Well that's how long I had timed them. May have been a little longer but definitely under the hour

Just had my airbag done at Donalds Mazda Ipswich. They managed to scratch 3 lines into the dashboard which is a shame as it was spotless before and they really stand out. Thankfully I'd set expectations to minimum before going in.

They did a video health check during which the technician criticised both 13Black and bigpete's work. A bit rich when the guy had just damaged the interior. Hopefully it'll be a long time before the next recall.

I have to get our R3 booked in for its recall and I’m dreading it because of experiences like this.

No I'd rather buy a new dashboard and drive 5 hours to have bigpete fit it. That's how much I don't want to give them the car again.
