After track day lots of grinding!

Post by rameshr »

So it’s def the pad...but how can the pad go like this(as per picture)? The pistons look like they are even.

Also these are the upgraded brakes on the front, anyone know the pad size I will need?

Cheers

Twin piston calipers should have a smaller piston on the leading end of the pad, and a larger piston on the trailing end of the pad. I don't know if these calipers have unequal piston sizes? And I'm not sure if the calipers can be mounted upside down or on the wrong side of the car? Things to check, anyway.

Looks like those top pistons are not applying the same pressure or the lower pistons are not "pulling back" when the pressure is released, but those are guesses really? I suggest you send the photo to the caliper and pad supplier asking for their opinion.

This is only normally needed in 6+ piston calipers. A lot of 4 piston calipers have the same sized piston top and bottom.
I would guess somethings not moving freely. Time to strip and clean them up. Don't push the pistons back in with them looking like that, you may damage the bore and you'll quickly get a sticking caliper. A quick scrub with a toothbrush and soapy water will sort them. Is that the original set of pads you had with the brakes?

The top pistons look like they have no dust boots, is this correct?

Neither top or bottom pistons have dust boots on these calipers. They run stainless steel pistons.

Yeah, that's the way these calipers work - you'll notice there's no groove on the piston for the dust boots to seat into. All you get with these ones is the square cut seals. I remember them well, because I helped install them. Pretty sure they're the right way up, bleed screws at the top of the caliper, and there were no obvious issues on the day apart from the fact it was bloody freezing. Freaky's advice will be the stuff to follow, seeing as he makes and supplies the kits. He can advise the pad code for replacements as well :)

Edit: he beat me to it ;)
To Do List: HKS CAMP2 install; cruise control; new exhaust; detail paintwork, possible respray

Done: Hayward Rotary rebuild and stage 2 port; Racing Beat ARBs, adjustable front droplinks, ram air intake and lightened flywheel; Exedy stage 1 clutch; Eibach Pro-Kit lowering springs; Koyo radiator; heated front screen; EBC redstuff pads all round

Give the pistons a good clean up and make sure they're moving well - the open piston calipers do tend to need a bit of maintaining when it comes to the pistons and road salt.
Loads of 4-pots have differential pistons - the Brembo's on my daily do - but they look like a Hispec or Wilwood aftermarket kit, which generally don't unless you're going for the bigger calipers. Looking at that you're probably going to need new discs after running the steel backing pad on it too - the right side looks notably thinner.

It's certainly somewhat strange as with equal-sized pistons you'd expect the taper wear to be worse at the top than the bottom - perhaps the pads were a touch large and binding on the stainless sliders, or the spring clip is deformed and holding the pad on slightly at that end.

Yea you are probably right, I do have spare discs I bought second hand. I was hoping these would not be damaged but it's safer to change them. Will take it to my mates where he has a garage and work on it over time.

Are you sure? I'm fairly confident that it's the leading edge of the pad that wear fastest, and that's the bottom with our rear mounted callipers.

My fault, I was assuming they were front mount like most production stuff, yes, probably just normal taper wear then, still worth checking the pistons move easily though.
Might be worth checking the pad compound too, taper wear like that can be accelerated if they're outside their temperature range as there's more pressure on the leading edge from the self-servoing effect.

These are M1144 which I thought was good for track use. Will try others later on.

1144 compound is great for track use and also for road, but like any pad compound they can be overheated with hard use and whilst you have upgraded the calipers and pads the discs are standard thickness and may struggle to dissipate any additional heat created by your harder use of the brakes.

No extra cooling from drillings and slots they are there to release gas from pads historically but today compounds don't "gas" like earlier compounds so dimples, through drilling and slots are largely cosmetic, now where is my steel helmet and flak jacket?

:whathesaid:

Plain discs (obviously) have more mass and surface area to contact the pad with, so I'm led to believe that they do a better job of absorbing heat away from the pads and then dissipating it than archaic designs that are more aesthetic.

Also, the bigger the pads the smaller the disc surface available to dissipate heat.
