Engine swap..

Post by Deanmclone »

Hey guys and gals

So I've been seeing videos kicking around of some nice engine swaps for the rx8 (obviously not for the pureists) has anyone on here done such a thing? Or anyone know any reputable garages that could do these swaps?

I have tried to search but it's not working so well on my phone :(

Thanks

Dean

Short answer is no....

There's a handful of people who have successfully swapped an engine into an rx8 in the UK. Lots started but not many finished....

The ones I know of that are actually running are a vag 1.8T and a 1JZ

The November issue of Banzai magazine ran a feature on this S1,running a 7.4 litre LSX454 V8,built by UK company DynoTorque..makes for amusing reading..

I have seen a rx7 they put an ls in as well looks like a good job but by the time it has a ls with corvette drivetrain you might as well just buy a corvette...

There was/is a V8 version in Birmingham I think that was a professional install and would cost c£15k minimum to replicate. The car is apparently a real handful to drive!

You may as well swap the car.. not worth the hassle or the money-pit you will need to do it properly, you will also spoil the rotary for what it is :( .. you are obviously not a purist, you're here because?

There was a Toyota 2jz RX8 at tunerfest last year doing drift demo's which seemed pretty well sorted.

Before I had an RX8 I had a Saab 900 and came across b204 engined RX8 build which was done on the cheap (whole car and install was done for around a grand!) which was rapid but shell was butchered to fit it in (firewall was cut) so not sure about the integrity.

Noticed this on Facebook today, looks pretty clean.

I’m pretty sure some guy in the states fitted a K20 from a type r in one and turbo’d it too. Had to chop some fire wall out tho. For me, it would be an REW followed by the K20 if really wanted a nightmare swap.

there was a guy on here who fitted a KLDE V6 from a Ford Probe/ Mazda MX6 - Custom adapter plate or the gearbox/BMW throtle cable set up and running on individual throttle bodies it made around 200bhp pretty much same power as a 231

There is a slight difference to swapping/cleaning wheels than the engine Nick ;)

Maybe I'm easily bored then but it's not like they're being culled left/right/centre for engine swaps, so I think they're more interesting than sacrilege.
Pete's 20B time attack build is no closer to a factory RX-8 (I'd say less), than a 1JZ or RB20 powered road car - certainly not in the grand scheme of things.

The more variety the better.
it's certainly better than having this RX8 forum flooded with all other makes of car.

OooOooh, if I could put either the 2018 Chevy 6.2 or 5.7l V8 in my RX8 then I'd happily sell a kidney... or testicles.

Watching this thread with interest :D

Sorry.. I'd just change the car for whatever car engine I contemplated putting in the RX8.. that's why you bought an 8 right, to swap the rotary engine?

Ive just had a thought.
We change the wheels
we change the suspension
we change the exhaust
we change the brakes
Its still an RX8
So if changing the engine its still primarily an RX8? Yeh ?
I like the car for the way it looks and the way it drives ,handles etc so if the way to get a bit more power is change the engine then I think that's a fair shout, its still an RX8.
Rejoice the RX8 ,its a beautiful car even if altered here and there...!
